James Mudge easternKicks.com More than anything, the film finds Laranas struggling to decide whether he wanted to make a horror film or a haunting gothic melodrama, though not managing to nail either Rated: 2.5/5 Oct 21, 2020 Full Review Oggs Cruz Rappler Aurora had promise. Sadly, it ends up dead in the water. Jul 19, 2019 Full Review Chris Newbould The National (UAE) Laranas displays some great technical work, and there's the germ of a good idea here struggling to get out. And they say practice makes perfect. Rated: 2/5 Jan 3, 2019 Full Review Read all reviews

Audience Member Movie: AURORA Personal Rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐ out of 5 The movie depicted the tragic maritime disaster in the Philippines when MV Doña Paz (coined as Asia's Titanic) sunk few days before Christmas in 1987. In this movie, a passenger ship collided with the rocky shores of Batanes. Similar to the Doña Paz, the ship was overloaded which led to it's final destination. The families of the victims were hoping to see the bodies of their dead relatives but the Philippine Coast Guard already declared that their work was over and done. The question now: What will happen to the bodies? How will they rest in peace? Screenplay: Lines were very strong, dark and unshakable. The story was well written with a few attempts to use flashbacks without the obvious drag in the movie. Cinematography: Color grade was spot on! The shoreline opening scene was eerie. Scenes were framed properly and it added depth to the story. Underwater scenes could still be improved but still good execution. Sound: One of the best scored movie amongst local films. The "Rise Up", "Surge Sursum" and "Aurora" were rivetting and gave me a lot of goosebumps. Oscar Fogelström's scoring was technically fit for the movie and comparable to the works of Hans Zimmer. Actors: Anne Curtis (Leana) is expected to get a Best Actress nod for this year's MMFF. She did not disappoint any of us. Rita, the younger sister of Leana was a breath of fresh air. Both actresses did not have to shout and scream, hence their body language, tone and eye movement were enough to convey the message. Direction: First class direction and editing skills from Yam Laranas and his team. It could have been a perfect movie if we were given more depth with the character of Rita and how the wreck was moved out. At first I thought Rita has supernatural powers (third eye) but there was also a scene that she was sleepwalking. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 02/17/23 Full Review Audience Member The movie could have been better, but with so many loop holes, no wonder it ended up in a huge shipwreck. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 02/23/23 Full Review Rayn L The astounding cinematography and musical scoring makes me intrigued to watch it even if I hate to attend MMFF. My only concern is where the victims of the sinked ship in Aurora just showed up lying in an old vacation stonehouse on the last half of the movie. There are some few scare jumps. One thing that's memorable for me, in a bad way, is the scene of Andrea Del Rosario's character was so scared hysterically about the ghost. I stumbled upon a review from Ogg Cruz from Rappler and I agreed that the people behindi this movie should have stay in the mood instead of shock. I guess they did that to be passable to the audience of MMFF which is known for featuring sure-money commercialized movie. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 01/15/20 Full Review Audience Member Aurora has a good premise story but the horror theme could have been better with better effects used in the film. Yet this is saved by its story told in a traditional old-fashioned style ghost story that never gets old but still entertaining to watch. Another reason to watch this film was the solid acting performance by Anne Curtis and its supporting casts like Allan Paule, Sue Prado, Mercedes Cabral and Ruby Ruiz which gave justices to their roles. The haunting background sound and setting in Batanes for making an eerie place of haunting ghosts were a plus for Aurora as it gave a level-up entertaining value to it as a horror movie. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 02/22/23 Full Review Audience Member It was very confusing, and it was fine.. some parts are actually very very very confusing.. and we couldnt understand the story, but overall it was just fine.. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 02/04/23 Full Review Audience Member This movie reminds me of a high school drama project! Aside from the low budget production, this movie has the most stupid story line. How can a ship as big as a cruise line end up getting stuck on a tiny island without getting help from the coast guard? The ship didn't sink so how did those people die? Didn't watch the entire film so nothing else to add. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 01/12/23 Full Review Read all reviews
