      What to Know

      Critics Consensus

Ava seems to have all the components of an entertaining spy thriller, but not even this spectacular cast is enough to salvage the dull, clichéd story they're given to work with.

Sean M What is this? Script is so cringe. Acting is terrible. Does anyone actually believe that Chastain would be an assassin? Bad casting. A literal line from the movie “keep your head down and powder dry” LOL what is this the 1700s?! Skip! Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 04/26/24 Full Review D H They're lucky I can't give this move negative stars. I enjoy strong female protagonists but this story is so unacceptably bad it defies belief. I understand the writer wanted to humanize Ava, give her everyday foibles, family trauma, and a massive vice to overcome. But these combined flaws are exactly what would make someone ineffective as an operative, you can't have it both ways. Generally, the plot points are dumb and I couldn't care less about any of the characters, much less the protagonist. What a waste of a decent cast. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 04/20/24 Full Review Jeffrey P An assassin with alcohol issues, family issues, relationship issues, work issues... she's got issues. A sound structure keeps it together but the family and personal issues outweigh the assassinating issues. The moral of the story really seemed to be ‘assassins are people too' and that has been done before but this was just too serious and with a plot that just got weaker as things went. Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 03/24/24 Full Review Luis M Starts off pretty good, then halfway it develops into family drama... but the worst part is the third act: SPOILERS: Not only the questions about the reason for the assassinations that started all the story is unanswered but are we to believe that the head of an international spy organization is going to attack their most value asset... by himself? with no backup? and the after the poorly choreographed fights, he just decides to take a walk on the park? injured and bloody as he is? he didn't have a car waiting for him? How could Jessica Chastain, an accomplished and talented actress, agree to this project? did she even read the script? I give this movie ONE star out of 5 * Rated 1 out of 5 stars 03/24/24 Full Review Victor W It is really not a movie, it is only called a 'movie!' Now, I better understand why the old timers like John Malkovich and Geena Davis take part in 'movies' like this, which add up to nothing but embarrassments for them -- take the money and run! Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 03/15/24 Full Review Cork B Wow this is bad. Never mind all the stupid plot holes and waste of some big names who seemed to plain just not care... you have to LIKE the protagonist. And she is just a whiney boozy homewrecker. tt stern-enzi WXIX-TV (Cincinnati, OH) I want to see more, but it should be more action-oriented...when it focuses on the drama, all of a sudden these characters aren't as impressive as they could be. Rated: C Mar 2, 2021 Full Review Katie Rife AV Club Ava is a napping-on-the-couch movie through and through, with recognizable names and a sexy premise but no distinct personality. Rated: C Sep 28, 2020 Full Review Matt Zoller Seitz RogerEbert.com If the action and espionage elements were executed at the same level as the dramatic and comedic exchanges and the observations about the types of people drawn to this life, Ava might've been a cult classic. Rated: 2.5/4 Sep 27, 2020 Full Review Charles Hartford But Why Tho? A Geek Community Ava provides an enjoyable and often nuanced story of family drama and international assassins. If you are looking for an easy to watch action flick, that also provides some feeling, this certainly isn’t a bad way to spend an hour and a half. Rated: 7/10 Jan 16, 2023 Full Review Keith Garlington Keith & the Movies While “Ava” may not come together to form the most cohesive movie, it has enough meat on its bones to make for an entertaining escape.
