What to Know

Critics Consensus

Ava seems to have all the components of an entertaining spy thriller, but not even this spectacular cast is enough to salvage the dull, clichéd story they're given to work with.

Katie Rife AV Club Ava is a napping-on-the-couch movie through and through, with recognizable names and a sexy premise but no distinct personality. Rated: C Sep 28, 2020 Full Review Matt Zoller Seitz RogerEbert.com If the action and espionage elements were executed at the same level as the dramatic and comedic exchanges and the observations about the types of people drawn to this life, Ava might've been a cult classic. Rated: 2.5/4 Sep 27, 2020 Full Review Bilge Ebiri New York Magazine/Vulture One of our most expressive actresses joining two of our most insistent hams in an action movie? How do you screw something like that up? Well, maybe by just stopping at the concept and calling it a day. Sep 26, 2020 Full Review Charles Hartford But Why Tho? A Geek Community Ava provides an enjoyable and often nuanced story of family drama and international assassins. If you are looking for an easy to watch action flick, that also provides some feeling, this certainly isn’t a bad way to spend an hour and a half. Rated: 7/10 Jan 16, 2023 Full Review Keith Garlington Keith & the Movies While “Ava” may not come together to form the most cohesive movie, it has enough meat on its bones to make for an entertaining escape. Rated: 3/5 Aug 19, 2022 Full Review Steven Warner In Review Online There's exactly one good scene in Ava. Jun 5, 2021 Full Review Read all reviews

John A A handful of reliable actors and some visual flair struggle to elevate this out of the mid-budget entry dustbin. Somehow the most engaging scenes are probably the sister/mother scenes. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 11/12/24 Full Review Marc Z There is a lot to like here, but also some not so much. This is an action thriller about an agent who ends up being the target of her own organization's assassination attempts. She is smart, resourceful, and troubled. She has an addictive past and deadly skills. The acting is decent. Jessica Chastain is good in the starring role. Malkovich and Farrell are excellent-they are the strengths of the movie. Here are the major issues. The first is that Geena Davis is just not right for the role of the mother. Her dialogue and delivery are so fake it is painful. Even worse than that is how poorly choreographed Chastain's fight scenes are. They make those parts unwatchable. I am not sure what the reason is, since the Farrell/Malkovich scene does not suffer from this issue. So, an action movie where the action is bad makes this less than desirable to watch. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 09/30/24 Full Review David S This movie was pretty good for about the 1st half. After the that the entire movie falls apart. Ava's actions in one scene conflict with the previous scene. The fights are ridiculous and the end makes no sense. Would recommend people avoid this. I guess they only paid for the 1st half of the script and pieced random scenes together for the rest. How would an ex-junkie with some regular army training become an elite assassin in less than 6 years? Why would an assassin be great at hand to hand combat? I guess you can tell I was very disappointed with this movie. Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 08/11/24 Full Review C. L I ended up with a smile on my face at the ending. It is worth watching. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 07/25/24 Full Review Chris B This movie was like pretty much most generic spy thrillers. It wasn't bad, but it wasn't really that great either. To be honest, I started this movie before bed and ended up going to sleep 3/4 of the way through. I started it close to my bedtime so I ended up finishing it the next day. Great movie if you are doing something like cooking and wanting to watch something in the background that you only need to watch it sometimes to keep up with the movie/plot. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 06/11/24 Full Review Danny H Some good action, some good side plots and the as always good acting from Jessica Chastain as well as the other name actors. Deserves to be better considered. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 05/27/24 Full Review Read all reviews
