      What to Know

      Critics Consensus

Although Aviva's unique depiction of early romance will strike some viewers as indulgent, it's a refreshingly unique take on a familiar subject.

Rich T A gorgeously rendered fever dream romance with a bittersweet ending that resonates long after you finish watching. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 03/25/23 Full Review Audience Member A vividly sensual film incorporating dance with dialogue which produces commentary input that dares to challenge the societal standards, stereotypes, and common views of gender. Aviva takes us on a rollercoaster ride through the ups and downs in a relationship of two lovers but with an interesting twist. This film is ambitious in its storytelling and extremely exquisite in its choreography. The film's ambition causes the story to get lost at times yet Aviva remains as a unique and fresh take on a classified "dance" film and most definitely worth your time. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 02/19/23 Full Review Audience Member This film is a real innovation in film making. It involves a relationship between a young couple getting to grips with life. One is a film maker in paris the other a young american male. the story seems to start with an internet relation before the couple move to meeting up. Then the Points of View become more fluid as is the representation of each individual. sometimes seen through an identity of the character played by another actor sometimes of another sex. Sometimes they appear as two different people( different aspects of themselves) There are alternative scenes of life. Direct talking by the actors to the screen, breakdowns into dance or expression through movement. Sometimes the actors appear as if off set. Nudity, graphic sex breaks downs artificial barriers showing people as they really are. you know you going to see something profound as soon as the film starts. it is an absolutely brilliantly imagined piece of pure perfomance art, the actors really have step beyond themselves to be this bold on camera and yet selfless. Possibly more than any other film I can see imagination in story telling go beyond excellence. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/11/23 Full Review eric d Worth it just for the music and dancing. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 03/31/23 Full Review Audience Member A story of love and loss that so sp perfectly ingrains the dance as part of the soul and conversation and moving the story forward. It was heightened each relationship and their day-to-day with heart,d desire, and soul that words couldn't express. The gender fluidity and bending for each character highlights the masculine and feminine in all of us that we should embrace and love. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/08/23 Full Review Audience Member This is a very innovative and beautiful movie. I loved the dance scenes (Bobbi Jene Smith is a genius) and the idea of using both a man and a woman to represent the same person. Cath Clarke Guardian This is not the last time director Yakin takes a sledgehammer to the fourth wall, and his deeply personal film is deeply exasperating at times, a bit indulgent and at least 20 minutes too long... But the film's big experiment feels only semi-interesting. Rated: 3/5 Apr 30, 2021 Full Review Richard Whittaker Austin Chronicle It could have been clumsy, could have been a gimmick. Instead, it's another feather in the wings that lift this extraordinary film. Rated: 4/5 Jun 23, 2020 Full Review Jude Dry indieWire It's an ambitious piece, but in the dance between experimental ideas and grounded storytelling, "Aviva" should have listened to her body. Rated: C+ Jun 16, 2020 Full Review Weiting Liu Vague Visages Aviva and Eden’s dances — together and apart — mobilize Yakin’s film, and function as bodily mirrors and emotional mirages; gain and loss, self and love. Feb 7, 2024 Full Review Dan Bayer Next Best Picture Easily one of the best and most unique films of this or any other year. Rated: 9/10 May 11, 2022 Full Review Daniel Gorman In Review Online The film is a cliched relationship drama obscured by so many bells and whistles, so much self-reflexive artistic intent...that it collapses under its own weight.
