What to Know

Critics Consensus

The increased gore and violence over the first Alien vs. Predator can't excuse Requiem's disorientating editing, excessively murky lighting, and lack of new ideas.

Nick Schager Slant Magazine Aliens vs. Predator - Requiem is literally shrouded in darkness, and the only explicable reason for this pitch-black visual schema is that the filmmakers understood it was better if no one could see the **** they were shooting. Rated: 1/4 Jan 20, 2008 Full Review Tim Robey Daily Telegraph (UK) At best the movie's an unpretentious pile-up of B-movie clichés, but why "Requiem"? Time to give it a rest now. Jordy M Aliens vs. Predator: Requiem opens with an energy that feels ripped straight out of a sci-fi video game—fast-paced, visually polished, and with special effects that, for their time, show a clear improvement over the previous film. The enhanced visual integration, especially in Earth-bound scenes, adds a noticeable cinematic flair. From the crash landing in the forest to the eerie urban infestations, the imagery sets a promising tone. However, the film’s logic is immediately questionable. The premise hinges on a surprising oversight by a species otherwise portrayed as highly advanced and methodical. This contradiction sets the stage for a story that often undermines its own world-building. Fans of the franchise might find themselves wondering how such a crucial misstep could befall the Predator race—warriors who supposedly specialize in hunting these very creatures. While the film never quite embraces the rich lore or characters from its predecessors, it does offer a few intriguing twists—chief among them a hybrid creature that fuses traits of both Alien and Predator. Conceptually interesting, it raises more questions than it answers, and the biological logic behind it may leave you unconvinced. Still, its presence injects a unique tension into the already chaotic mix. The cinematography is surprisingly competent. The color grading and shot composition are often quite strong, helping to amplify suspense, particularly in nighttime sequences. One clever scene involving a child in bed stands out as a rare moment of psychological tension, suggesting the film could have delivered more nuanced horror had it leaned in that direction. Unfortunately, where the film falters most is in its character work. The performances range from wooden to forgettable, with many of the human characters lacking the charisma, depth, or development necessary to carry the narrative. Attempts at teen drama feel forced and cliché, and even when tragedy strikes, the emotional impact is minimal. There’s little incentive to root for anyone—except, ironically, for the Predator itself, who emerges as the most competent and compelling figure, despite having no dialogue or backstory. The action sequences are frenetic and, at times, entertaining, but they often suffer from clumsy editing and an overreliance on darkness to mask their limitations. That said, some set pieces—particularly in locations like hospitals or swimming pools—succeed in creating palpable tension, even if they’re surrounded by questionable decision-making and disjointed pacing. By the time the film reaches its explosive finale, it’s clear that spectacle has been prioritized over storytelling. The resolution is abrupt and emotionally hollow, sacrificing depth for dramatic impact. While it ties up the immediate threat, it does little to satisfy fans hoping for meaningful narrative progression or connection to the wider franchise. In the end, Aliens vs. Predator: Requiem is a visually stimulating yet narratively shallow entry in the Alien and Predator saga. It delivers just enough action and visual flair to entertain in the moment—but lacks the lasting impact, character depth, and mythological cohesion that made earlier entries so iconic. It’s a popcorn movie at best—one that might entertain you in spite of itself, but is unlikely to linger once the credits roll. Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 07/13/25 Full Review Mihai Daniel P And to think people used to say the first one was bad... I really tried to like this movie as hidden deep there's probably a way better one, but it's hard and one must excuse quite a lot of flaws in order to enjoy it: sub-mediocre plot that barely exists thanks to the first one, cheap TV level dialogue, soulless characters that you won't give a crap about and root to be killed of as nasty as possible, horrible edits and lightning (like, there's no way I can possible express how horrible these 2 are)... they wasted excellent gore and a solid Predator design on this whatever you wanna call it.... The first one is a masterpiece by comparison (though I'm still quietly hoping for a bluray/4k remaster that fixes the awful lighting and make it more digestible) Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 07/09/25 Full Review Matthew P You'll have a hard time comprehending the action through a murky palette and disorienting editing... but if you do, you'll be confronted with two-dimensional characters and a weak plot that will ensure that this movie has a quick burial. Amen... Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 07/07/25 Full Review Ryan H Falls squarely into the “so bad, it’s good” territory. The Wolf Predator is amazing, the Aliens have never looked better and the creature effects remain the best. If you ignore the human element, there’s a decent film in here somewhere (when you can see what’s on screen). Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 07/06/25 Full Review Martin W An underrated Predator movie. The human character are bland, cannon fodder and that's fine with me because the monsters and special effects are the star of the show. When the action hits it's stylish, atmospheric and cool. It's no masterpiece but it is memorable and good fun. Compared to current efforts(bar the excellent Prey)it's one of the better ones! Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 07/01/25 Full Review Dalton S.
