Critics Consensus

A flawed but finely cut gem, Baby Ruby puts the horror of new parenthood under a frighteningly effective magnifying glass.

Christy Lemire FilmWeek (KPCC - NPR Los Angeles) You can look at it as a dark comedy, a thriller, a horror movie, or as a psychological study. It gets to a lot of truth about how confused you feel when you're a new mom. Feb 15, 2023 Full Review Sheila O'Malley RogerEbert.com [Baby Ruby] operates at a high-pitched melodrama-horror level, and the constant frenzy becomes exhausting. Rated: 1.5/4 Feb 3, 2023 Full Review Robert Abele Los Angeles Times Disorienting, tense, funny and scary. Feb 3, 2023 Full Review Kat Halstead Common Sense Media The movie keeps viewers guessing for the most part, leaning on tried and tested horror tropes to maintain the sense of unease, even as viewers are steered to wonder if the danger is coming from inside the house. Aug 28, 2024 Full Review Prabhjot Bains Tilt Magazine While Bohl’s story is the epitome of a waking fever dream, it never becomes a gloomy slog. Instead, it’s imbued with a playful and inventive campiness that is emblematic of the absurdly torturous realities of parenthood. Nov 2, 2023 Full Review Akos Peterbencze The Screen The purposely ambiguous cinematography, with its abrupt cuts and perplexing visuals, is clearly a manipulative tool that Wohl uses to great effect. Sarah Anne Interestingly similar to Rosemary's Baby with Zoe Seldona. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 04/02/23 Full Review Diana S Overall I thought this was really well done and ultimately quite moving. I was glued to the screen for the last two-thirds. Also Jayne Atkinson was completely amazing! Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 08/26/24 Full Review Audience Member dont watch ts…you’ll be better off watchin a tubi film… Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 08/21/24 Full Review Tony L Baby Ruby attempts to delve into the tumultuous world of horror and motherhood, but unfortunately, it stumbles everywhere. While the film aims to capture the challenges of a good horror movie and the complexities of postpartum life, it ultimately falls short of its mark. The Cinematography is bad, the dialogue is awful and film's depiction of hospital settings and postpartum experiences feels ridiculous and unrealistic and if you ever find a nurse that talks to you in that manner, and traumatizes you to the point where you can't poop, please sue that hospital. As someone with firsthand experience in healthcare, I couldn't help but laugh at all the inaccuracies and over dramatizations. Ultimately, Baby Ruby is a perplexing experience that leaves viewers scratching their heads, wondering where the story was headed and why. Also, Kit Harington consistently plays "Jon Snow" in every film. Pompeii, Eternals, Gunpowder... I mean she could have just yelled at him, "You know nothing, Jon Snow" that's all that was missing in this movie for the main character to yell at him "You know nothing, Jon Snow"... Rated 1 out of 5 stars 08/20/24 Full Review Marcia M Reading some of the reviews before I watched this, I expected a disappointing horror film- building hysteria and some kind of bizarre, inexplicable ending. I realise after watching that most of these reviewers were looking for bona fide (Rosemary's Baby??) horror. All I can say is that if you've experienced motherhood OR if you're willing and open to read the film as a deep-dive into that often frighteningly binary, emotional experience, you're in for a very good watch indeed. It might not be classic horror (and therefore a disappointment to paranormal/gore/freaks) but it's an emotionally astute, genius telling Rated 5 out of 5 stars 08/15/24 Full Review Grainne F I have rarely sat through such utter rubbish .. no insight to new parenthood , no storyline, snippets of a Rosemary’s baby remake that goes nowhere. I will never get this time back.. don’t bother !! Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 08/13/24 Full Review Read all reviews
