Audience Member Paper Soldiers meets Right Stuff meets Princess Bride meets Weeping Camel meets Mad Max... all with a light touch that may render it poor fodder for a world of watchers gone to noisy special effects. Set in the steppes of central Asia, on the edge of the old Soviet cosmodrome, the film centres on a village of Kazakhs who make their income collecting junk from rocket first stages and selling it, generally being exploited in the process. The central male character is the warm hearted nerdy lad whose radio (which might come from Mad Max 6) tells him when rockets will launch and junk will fall. Of course what falls is the paying French tourist cosmonaut, in a coma from the landing. The female lead. The story could be junky and overdone and could have had an absurd ending but it isn't and it doesn't. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 02/07/23 Full Review Audience Member I loved it. Cute original story. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 01/31/23 Full Review Audience Member Typical Film Festival movie about Mongolians in Baikanur Cosmonaut City interacting with the Russian space program. Even though it wasn't subtitled and all in Russian, it was still interesting enough for me to watch. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 01/26/23 Full Review Audience Member Whatever falls from heaven, you may keep When astronaut Julie Mahé crash-lands with her small space capsule onto the Kazakh steppes, local radio operator Iskander (nicknamed 'Gagarin') finds her unconscious. Hopelessly lovestruck, he convinces the amnesiac Julie that they are engaged to be married. But even the most romantic lie cannot remain undiscovered forever. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 01/13/23 Full Review Audience Member A near future (very near future) science fiction romance set where falling launch debris from Russian launch facility both supports and occasionally threatens a neighboring Kazakh village because "Whatever falls from heaven, you may keep." When a lovely amnesiac space tourist falls from heaven into the life of a space-struck romantic ... Rated 3 out of 5 stars 01/12/23 Full Review Audience Member Joyously surreal music by Goran Bregovi´c plays as a quirky fable about a lonely boy in a space research center somewhere around Mongolia, sometime, finding the sleeping beauty of his dreams unfolds. This is "Baikonur," an odd, unfocused but lovable romance accompanied by experimental visuals and a bold, in some ways old fashioned yet fresh take on storytelling. The plot is simple, and the movie is more focused on its admittedly enchanting magic than on clear themes, but there are some basic philosophical questions here that are addressed in a compelling manner.
