Audience Member Interesting musical fantasy. It was filmed in Israel, but takes place in some imaginary location, because the towns mentioned in the film do not exist in Israel. The protagonists look more like Gypsies than Israelis, because many people wear hats Gypsy-style. The plot is to gather the members of the disbanded, but once popular music band to play a certain piece ("The Ballad of the Weeping Spring") to the former member of the band who's dying of cancer. The music is beautiful. You don't have to love the Middle Eastern music to appreciate it. The sound is more of Turkish-Azeri style rather than Arabic. A beautiful movie worth watching. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/27/23 Full Review Audience Member Though highly original, The Ballad of Weeping Springtime has echoes of The Seven Samurai,(Akira Kurasawa) and The Magnificent Seven (Western directed by John Sturges) but with musicians/music as its protagonists. As the Samurai and the Magnificent Seven, the film has a magical, ethereal quality which transcends time and place. To me the characters looked like Romany Gypsies, to others as Iraqis. The spectacular music is said to be Sephardic Jewish of a largely unknown genre from along the silkroad via Persia, Uzbekistan, Azerbaijan, Afghanistan and India, so presumably the characters belong in that region. The mystical story, the breath-taking music and the fine acting, photography and cinematography make this original movie a charming and memorable experience. Whether it has an underlying intellectual message is a point for extended discussion. 'The Ballad' which gives the film its name, and another song in the film, are songs of yearning. Are they for love? or songs sung by the disposed for their own land? If there is a political message, this great Israeli film has a universal message for the soul.
