Retired pugilist Bernard "Bang Bang" Rozyski (Tim Blake Nelson) is inspired to try his hand at training once he reconnects with his estranged grandson. While their training brings Bang Bang out of the hole he's been living in, everyone questions his motivations, including an ex-girlfriend from decades ago, who was privy to Bang Bang's meteoric rise in the sport in the 80s as well as the rivalry with his former opponent, her cousin and Detroit's Mayoral candidate Darnell Washington. Is Bang Bang merely passing down inherited rage, or is there true altruism behind his tutelage?

Glenn Kenny RogerEbert.com Like a lot of other stuff in this movie, it actually transcends the clichés of the genre while acknowledging those clichés as containing kernels of truth. Rated: 3/4 Sep 15, 2025 Full Review Christian Zilko IndieWire The washed-up fighter archetype who spits poetry about the demons he now battles has been done to death. Yet it becomes clear those cliches are the point. Rated: B Jun 12, 2024 Full Review Tina Kakadelis Beyond the Cinerama Dome Bang Bang is not about the moments in the ring, but the tougher moments that come after. When the spotlight’s off and the blood has dried, what kind of person will you be? Sep 16, 2025 Full Review Todd Jorgenson Cinemalogue Fighting against the script’s cliches, Nelson finds a winning balance of twitchy energy and hardscrabble wisdom. Sep 12, 2025 Full Review Jared Mobarak Hey, Have You Seen ...? Similar to Old Henry, [Nelson] really sinks his teeth into the role to embody the gruff exterior while still maintaining a level of pathos that ensures he never alienates the audience. Rated: 7/10 Sep 12, 2025 Full Review Julian Roman MovieWeb Tim Blake Nelson electrifies the screen as a deeply flawed former boxer attempting to make amends for past failures. Bang Bang is a fascinating character study that pulls no punches, depicting the highs and lows of an acerbic protagonist. Rated: 3.5/5 Sep 11, 2025 Full Review Read all reviews
