      Critics Consensus

Sporadically suspenseful, Barbarians is too tonally indecisive to consistently make its most important points.

Rated 2 out of 5 stars 03/22/24 Full Review Divan v The writer chose a bunch of ominous things he could think of with zero intention or talent to have them contribute to the movie. A wounded fox, a eary rock that causes disturbing thoughts as shown in her art, animosity between friends, a bottle of drugs and the affair between the main characters. Literally none of which contributed to the story. It's just a botched hostage situation, that's it. Written by a child with a crayon. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 06/29/23 Full Review Ava d The movie was very slow and had a bad plot, the acting was just as bad I was not entertained. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 01/30/23 Full Review Jared E Way too much to the point of confusion. Nothing good came from this movie. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 01/07/23 Full Review waititi w I literally knew what was going to happen in this movie from the first 10 minutes or so. Can we stop with these home invasion movies? I see what the film makers were trying to do. But the characters were so flat and one sided. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 03/31/23 Full Review captain b This movie is terrible; so terrible it's great. You can't take it seriously. I was laughing every time the actual monster was on screen. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/17/23 Full Review Read all reviews Post a rating

John Anderson Wall Street Journal Barbarians is sometimes a comedy of ill manners, sometimes an exhilarating thriller, but it’s also an amusingly clever and sometimes violent parable about venality, vulgarity and territoriality. Jun 29, 2022 Full Review James Berardinelli ReelViews Dorfman’s venture into this familiar milieu is sufficiently well-made to make it worth the time. And, unlike too many recent thrillers, it doesn’t overstay its welcome. Rated: 3/4 Apr 3, 2022 Full Review Mark Peikert indieWire We’ve reached the depressing stage of our society where taking the tiny step from rage into action no longer seems that big a leap. When it comes to exposing the whited sepulcher of modern life, Barbarians can’t compete with the news. Rated: C Apr 1, 2022 Full Review John Serba Decider Charles Dorfman never gets this blend of satire, psychological thriller and chilly, understated horror to congeal into something memorable. Jan 5, 2023 Full Review Dennis Schwartz Dennis Schwartz Movie Reviews Has some merit but disappoints because it is more interested in the film's conversation parts than in providing the scares needed for a horror pic. Rated: C+ May 20, 2022 Full Review Kristy Strouse Wonderfully Weird and Horrifying Barbarians constructs a level of keen curiosity but eventually fades into the familiar, with an unimpressive final showdown. I wanted to like this much more than I did, and I believe the bones for success were there, if not for a miscalibration of pieces. Apr 30, 2022 Full Review Read all reviews
