Audience Member Brilliant! Eleanor Boardman is absolutely breathtaking! Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 02/08/23 Full Review Audience Member John Gilbert and Elenor Boardman make a beautiful pair, and their scene at the lake, boating under willow trees, is romantic and rather steamy for 1926. That scene alone makes the film worth watching, and it's fun to see the dashing Gilbert later make a great escape, scramble up a castle, and engage in sword fights that may remind you of Errol Flynn a decade later. Gilbert seems underrated today given how popular he was in the 1920's, and his personal story - clashing with studio head Louis B. Mayer over his high salary ($250,000 for each of six films), his near marriage to Greta Garbo in what would have been a double ceremony with Boardman and director King Vidor, etc - is fascinating. While the film has its moments, it also trundles along at a slow pace, and the plot is rather mundane, so keep your expectations grounded. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 01/13/23 Full Review Audience Member Some of the action sequences are decades before their time. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 02/25/23 Full Review Audience Member Elaborate MGM silent film works largely because of the appeal of its star, John Gilbert. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 02/27/23 Full Review Audience Member An immensely enjoyable silent swashbuckler based on a Rafael Sabitini novel. I have not seen a lot of John Gilbert's work, but he was apparently one of MGM's biggest stars of the period. I can see why. He has an engaging screen presence and a real talent for comedic action. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 02/01/23 Full Review Audience Member A delightful recently discovered lost silent film from the dashing Silent Star John Gilbert that is a whole lot of fun. Even though it was made as a somewhat satire of the Swashbuckler/Romance genre it holds up on its own well. It's got a lot going for it & is a real treat. It has everything witty dialogue, lots of laughs, action, romance & of course Sword Duels. The dedication to put this together was amazing, they found a damaged French Print & restored it immaculately. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 01/31/23 Full Review Read all reviews
