Craig Mathieson The Sunday Age Turns the city's landscape and cultural memory upside down as it tracks the life of the Indigenous stage and screen actor Jack Charles (The Chant of Jimmie Blacksmith), who was also gay, a cat burglar, and a long-term heroin addict. Rated: 3.5/5 Nov 27, 2018 Full Review Amber Wilkinson Eye for Film Courtin-Wilson's approach is graceful, impressionistic and with the heart of a poet. Rated: 4.5/5 Feb 6, 2013 Full Review Simon Foster sbs.com.au As a portrait of a damaged man, ravaged by substance abuse and poorly exploiting the natural gifts bestowed upon him, the film is insightful, personal and candid. Audience Member Magnificent. Amiel Courtin-Wilson is a serious talent. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 01/21/23 Full Review Audience Member A very powerful and raw Doco about a forgotten aborigianal actor who was involved in the first black theatre in australia...when we first meet Jack he is shooting up, he says if I didn't show this it wouldn't be true depiction of me...he a funny little man with his gray long hair and beard...he lives on the street sleeping in toilets and laundrys... he start to feel for him and what he has been through but all the while he is a interesting and engaging person who would be interesting to know... this is a Doco that I think everybody should watch. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 01/19/23 Full Review Audience Member Compelling portait of a stunning man (An Aboriginal, gay, actor, musician, heroin addict, homeless, burgular) that suffers from long meaningless shots of 'pretty' things, making it look like a showreel for the cinematographer instead of adding ANYTHING at all to the film. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 01/13/23 Full Review Audience Member really quite touching documentary, yer man is a real haracter Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 01/21/23 Full Review Audience Member Piercing doc on the daily struggle of Aboriginal actor & drug addict Jack Charles is non-judgmental, honest & quietly devastating. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 02/06/23 Full Review Audience Member This is really fantastic! I went to the Q&A session to this film and Jack Charles is an amazing man...completely charming even when he's been at his worst. A must see for anyone who walks along Smith St and has an inquiring mind to know more. Amiel has done a great doc and we should all support local artist by seeing what they have produced!
