      What to Know

      Critics Consensus

Director Tim Burton's dark, brooding atmosphere, Michael Keaton's work as the tormented hero, and the flawless casting of Danny DeVito as The Penguin and Christopher Walken as, well, Christopher Walken make the sequel better than the first.

patrick p My son and I loved it !!! I saw it when it first came out in 1992, and didnt realize how well done it truly is until I grew older. Its visually amazing, and also has a great story, music, and just an all around great movie. Go and see it !! :) Rated 5 out of 5 stars 09/18/22 Full Review Oscar O In three years the writing and acting went downhill from the first movie to the second movie everybody just wants to hump cat woman and the global warming agenda has started to be forced down our throats!!! It’s a shame. This movie is not appropriate for younger children and this movie is not as good as the first one by a huge margin. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 09/18/22 Full Review Melissa M my son and I loved seeing this Batman movie in the theater! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 09/18/22 Full Review Miguel Ángel D Una de las mejores películas de Batman y me hubiera gustado que así hubiera sido Batman forever y Batman y robin Rated 5 out of 5 stars 04/28/24 Full Review Moises G They say this movie is a classic, but being a classic doesn't mean it's good. I really didn't like the movie, especially the part where Selina turns into Catwoman. I know it's a movie based on comic books, but it takes a lot of suspension of disbelief to watch this movie. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 04/14/24 Full Review Dragan T The best Batman movie, in my honest opinion. It was a time when some directors were given free reign to do whatever they wanted on a big budget superhero movie, unfortunately that level of creative freedom will never be allowed again. Part fairytale, part psychological drama, packed into Tim Burton's gothic weirdness and certain people hate it for that. The three villains represent the distorted facets of Bruce Wayne: Catwoman = vigilante, Penguin = orphan, Max Shreck = businessman, Burton never beats you over the head with heavy handed dialogue, he never spoon feeds the audience about the themes, you just need to watch and make your own observations. So whenever I read or watch someone claim that Batman Returns is "style over substance", I know they're the type of people who love everything to be explained to them through dialogue i.e. copious amount of exposition. And no, it's not 2deep4u bs, all I'm saying is those who claim that there's nothing in Returns except for "Burton being Burton" clearly haven't paid attention while watching it. James Berardinelli ReelViews Although Batman Returns is tonally lighter than its predecessor, the film nevertheless exists in the shadows. It’s also weirder, an indication of Burton exerting stronger creative control. Rated: 3/4 Apr 12, 2024 Full Review Stephanie Rosenfeld Bitch Media Why isn't this movie called Catwoman? Dec 17, 2020 Full Review Peter Bradshaw Guardian A strange beast. Rated: 2/5 May 17, 2019 Full Review Cory Woodroof For the Win (USA Today) It’s everything you’d want a Burton Batman movie to be, complete with some incredible set designs and yet another banger of a score from Elfman. Feb 28, 2024 Full Review Christian Eulinberg InSession Film What makes a good superhero story is a villain, and they both played their parts so well. Sep 26, 2023 Full Review Chase Hutchinson Collider More than the character or the love people have for him, it is about the unique vision that it fully executes. Batman Returns is a Burton movie just as much as it is one about The Caped Crusader. Rated: A Jun 17, 2023 Full Review Read all reviews
