Sara Stewart New York Post Stylistically it's a beauty, with khaki-uniformed waifs fighting for their lives to a crashing classical score. Rated: 3/4 May 25, 2012 Full Review A.O. Scott New York Times Awful deaths (and hysterical reactions to them) punctuate declarations of love and friendship, revelations of treachery and heavily armed expressions of angst. Audience Member I was absolutely shocked by this film and found myself mad that I never heard of it. The scenes capture the brutal violence behind life-or-death situations. Even the violence and gore made me feel disturbed which is good because that's how it's supposed to attract you. The drama that sparks amongst the young teens leading into severe consequences. The overall narrative was very well put together. I found myself at times routing for some of the characters and felt tense at times. The will to survive can lead to so many dark avenues and this captures how far you are willing to become less human. The acting was great with how much the actors put into their characters making each and every scene capturing that realism. I enjoyed this movie significantly and would rewatch it. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 05/09/25 Full Review Andrew R After watching this film I can say that I am GREATLY disturbed. It made me feel incredibly uncomfortable, and this is partially due to the fact that the children are so young and given such a horrendous task. Movies like this in my opinion should not be allowed to be made, and I personally believe that the minds who are writing, and okay-ing the production of films like these to happen need to re-evaluate the content of their screenplays. This being said, I think the cinematography of the film was incredibly well done, and that it felt very realistic in its way. It didn't particularly feel like I was watching a narrative film, but rather perhaps a documentary. Overall I would give the film a 6/10, and I would not recommend it to a friend. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 05/08/25 Full Review Esteban M Battle Royale is insane. It is exactly what you would get that is a weird mini-movie child of The Hunger games and a Japanese reality show gone awry. The plot is simple and downright horrific. The story has a typical premise which is placed within the confines of organized anarchy in which the students must kill one another, unless they want to die themselves on an island they cannot escape from, and only one is promised to be left alive to leave the island. I think what makes this crazy film so captivating is the chaos that ensues—friendships ripped apart by trust, betrayal, and primal instincts of pure survival, while witnessing the ultimate breakdown of society. These characters are each incredibly fascinating, and the action is incredibly visceral, but not gratuitous. It is not for everyone, it is violent, visceral and hits your face with the social commentary about human nature. But if you like fast-paced, heart-racing movies with a good amount of blood, and don't mind something weird, seek this one out. It is a cult classic for a reason. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 05/08/25 Full Review Michael C Battle Royale is a very heavy film that deals with the internal problems that teenagers have such as heightened emotions, drama and suspicion between each other. Each student has some reason or another to want to stay alive but with how most of the contestants are blood lustful, the black comedy feels more warranted as the underlying darkness is masked by the over-the-top deaths and eccentric nature of the characters. The way the story presents each character with a different arc of who they were and what they have become as a result of the game they were forced into also kind of speaks to how people so young would react to killing and death in such a brutal. The story also introduces the backstory or memories of so many characters but when they appear it feels too small and unnecessary that could have made the ending make more sense if it was better executed or just placed earlier in the film. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 05/05/25 Full Review Audience Member Battle Royale is a shocking and intense Japanese film about a group of high school students forced to fight each other to the death. The government chooses one class every year to control the growing number of troubled youth. The students are taken to an island, given weapons, and told that only one can survive. The movie is violent, but it’s not just about action—it also shows how fear, trust, and friendship break down when people are pushed to the limit. Some students turn on each other, while others try to stay kind or escape. It’s scary to imagine being in their place, which is what makes the film so powerful. The story makes you think about how people act when the world feels unfair or hopeless. Even though it’s disturbing, Battle Royale is also emotional and meaningful. It shows the dark side of human nature but also moments of real courage and hope. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 05/04/25 Full Review Audience Member This movie is about a government funded, murder spree pity party of one horrible teacher who takes out all his frustrations on his former students. Students skip class? Let’s enroll them in the new government funded program where they all kill each other until one is left! Honestly the whole film is crazy and tragic, showing different aspects of how different people and their friends cope with such a terrible situation and that’s a good move they made with the movie. But it just felt like a bunch of crazy adults punishing kids with death and trauma just because of an uprising in juvenile delinquents. It wasn’t that bad of a movie and I genuinely wanted to see how it would end, but there’s just so much I didn’t like so I’m going to rate it a 3 / 5 stars.
