This luminous, hypnotic tale of love at the roulette wheel has not been seen theatrically in the U.S. since its original 1964 release. In this lighthearted precursor to "Croupier," Jeanne Moreau stars as Jackie, a compulsive gambler who falls in love with a bank clerk (Claude Mann) on holiday in Nice. At first, the two lovers simply use each other as good luck charms; but what happens to love when luck runs out? Painstakingly and lovingly restored by Agnès Varda.

Ed . Addiction friction: Kenny Rogers was right. I bet you'll enjoy this very entertaining story of bad influences, temptation, vice and hope. We've all had a co-worker, friend or even partner who has suggested, seduced or cajoled us into doing something harmful or wrong. In this film, Jeanne Moreau plays a mother who had forgone her husband, alimony, even custody of her son to instead succumb to her gambling addiction. It's rare even today for the husband to have sole or even primary custody - imagine how much rarer it was in 1963. This film deftly shows how quickly a young man descends into this addiction, yet is never maudlin or excessive in its dramatism. Compared with typical Hollywood films, this one has an ending that may surprise you. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 08/29/25 Full Review Read all reviews
