BadNews R Beast of the Water (2017) This was a very uncomfortably awkward film from beginning to end. At first, I was intrigued because the casting had some recognizable names and faces. It almost felt like every few minutes a new celebrity or known personality popped up, which gave me hope that the movie might lean into its campy potential. Unfortunately, that never happened. The script was clunky, the pacing was all over the place, and the overall execution made it very hard to stay engaged. The acting was extremely uneven. WWE wrestler Ethan Carter III (Michael Hutter) plays Detective Alan Rhodes, and while he was arguably the best of the bunch, his delivery still felt stiff at times. Brodus Clay (George Murdoch), another wrestler, shows up as Officer Steve Miller, but his performance was flat and unconvincing, almost like he was phoning it in. Then there was Steve Cardenas, who fans know as Rocky, the second Red Power Ranger in Mighty Morphin Power Rangers. Here he plays Professor Jackson, and while it was fun to see him in something outside of Power Rangers, his character was reduced to almost a running joke, which felt like a waste of his presence. The script itself was a jumble of half-baked ideas. Scenes didn’t connect smoothly, motivations were unclear, and even the dialogue felt off — like it hadn’t been polished before filming. At times, it seemed like the cast didn’t know how serious to take the material, and that made for an even more confusing experience. The biggest offender, however, was the creature. For a movie that literally has “Beast” in the title, the monster was shockingly underwhelming. The CGI was extremely poor, almost cartoonish, and it looked completely bogus on screen. Rather than feeling like a menacing threat, it came across more like an unfinished animation project. In a horror film, your creature is supposed to carry a sense of dread — but here, it was nearly impossible to take seriously. Overall, Beast of the Water was a very rough watch. The idea of bringing in wrestlers and a former Power Ranger should’ve been fun, but instead it just highlighted how bad the script and production were. The only real reason to check this movie out is if you’re curious to see those familiar faces in such a bizarre setting. If you’re looking for a strong story, decent acting, or even a halfway believable monster, this is not the movie for you. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 08/28/25 Full Review Audience Member The Crazy Bones bird skeleton in the first few seconds spoke to the cheapness of this movie. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 02/23/23 Full Review Audience Member This shouldn't even have a rating. It's awful. Even for a low budget movie. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 01/30/23 Full Review Audience Member The beginning started off good, but didn't get into any action until the last 30 mins. Stopped watching with 20 minutes left. Wouldn't waste your time watching. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 02/15/23 Full Review frankie s Obviously they left the movie wide open in the end for a sequel but it doesn't deserve one. EC3 is a terribly horrific actor & his acting was the worst part of the movie. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 03/31/23 Full Review Read all reviews
