Ken Jaworowski New York Times The filmmakers rarely delve into the spiritual aspects of the story, but that's O.K. You don't have to believe in Padma and Urgain's religion to believe in them. Apr 30, 2018 Full Review John DeFore The Hollywood Reporter A doc packing much more charm than its esoteric-sounding subject might suggest. Mar 2, 2018 Full Review John Hartl Seattle Times As playfully time-oriented as its title, Becoming Who I Was makes reincarnation a central part of its story about a journey through more than one life. Rated: 2.5/4 Jun 15, 2017 Full Review Michael McNeely That Shelf A good documentary doesn't need to tell you everything, but it should arouse your curiosity about the world around you. This one certainly does. Feb 6, 2019 Full Review Rob Aldam Backseat Mafia A wonderful documentary about the bond between a child and his teacher. Audience Member The relationship between the boy (Rinpoche) and his Uncle is profound and moving, especially as it advances toward the end, when the two of them embark on a long journey on foot, bus, and via hitchhiking, from Northern India to the border of Tibet (the boy wants to return to the land of his previous life, where he was celebrated as an important Buddhist monk). The film may seem slow for those who need a plot-driven narrative; but if one craves a poignant character profile, and a glimpse into how the simple life can be a joyful one, this film will not disappoint. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 01/17/23 Full Review Audience Member best road movie i ever watched Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/12/23 Full Review Audience Member This movie is just beautifully done. The devotion that the older monk has for his young Rinpoche is endearing. The subtitles make it a bit difficult, but the story is touching and the scenery so harsh, that you are drawn into their journey regardless. The characters are so lovable, gentle and happy in spite of hardships. i found myself in tears at the end of the film and thinking about it for a long time after.
