Critics Consensus

Bedknobs and Broomsticks often feels like a pale imitation of a certain magical guardian and her wards, but a spoonful of Angela Lansbury's witty star power helps the derivativeness go down.

Angela Lansbury's zany feature is just as enchanting as it was in 1971 and more radical than some may remember. Go to Full Review

David Tomlinson does his English Fred MacMurray act rather well, Miss Lansbury is as watchable as always and the children aren't too awful. It'll take a mint of money, but not mine. Go to Full Review

TheMovieSearch R @TheMovieSearch 4d Disney’s Bedknobs and Broomsticks remains a charming piece of fantasy filmmaking, filled with warmth, whimsy, and a bright sense of imagination that still resonates today. The film’s magical energy draws you in from the start, creating a world where spells, adventure, and humor blend with ease. Angela Lansbury delivers a graceful and engaging performance, while the child actors bring sincerity and heart that deepen the story’s emotional core. The musical numbers are sweet and uplifting, giving the film an added layer of joy even when they aren’t all instantly memorable. Its mix of live action and animation retains its creative spark, showcasing Disney’s ambition during the era. Though the pacing reflects its 1970s roots, the film’s kindness and imagination make it easy to sink into its warm, nostalgic glow. My one concern is that younger viewers might resist its vintage style, but for anyone willing to embrace an older classic, it remains an enchanting and lovingly crafted experience. Une comédie musicale efficace avec un magnifique duo Lansbury-Tomlinson ! Bien sûr, les effets spéciaux ont mal vieilli mais si on fait abstraction de ça, c'est un bon moment familial à passer. This is the type of Kids' Movie like "Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory", "Pete's Dragon" and of course "Mary Poppins". They are their own unique kind of experience. The movie is light on story. Miss Price is an apprentice witch who wants to learn a specific spell and complete her witch training. Every plot point that attempts to move things forward gets sidelined for minutes of filler. For example, our heroes need to find a book. In order to do so, they have a song and dance number. They need to go to an island. They then take a detour where they sing and dance with some fish and spend 10 minutes watching animals play soccer. The movie just kind of trails off. It has nearly a 2-hour runtime and most of it is just affects driven filler. I can't imagine kids of today having the attention span to sit through these various side quests. There are certain emotional beats that feel really rushed, where other plot points feel like they drag on unnecessarily long. Like out of nowhere the kids will have a change of heart, be laughing at someone juggling "I love you, will you be our new daddy?". Where did that come from? The ending also makes the lessons learned throughout very unclear. Angela Lansbury is always a delight. David Tomlinson does a great job. The movie has a great imagination, there really aren't many movies like this one. Your enjoyment will entirely depend on how patient you are with filler material. It isn't always the destination but the journey. Much like Miss Price's magic, it a bit sloppy, impractical but still something special. See more Read all reviews
