I had trouble suspending disbelief. To start with, for all the effort that has gone into digging trenches and sourcing uniforms, I was never entirely persuaded that the heroes were fighting on the Western Front.

The script needs a bit more time, a bit more work, the direction needs a bit more finessing, the acting is as it can with the writing and direction, and the cinematography saves the film from feeling like a bit of a waste of time.

was very average, wanted to fast forward, got seriously bored, did not arouse any other emotion. Kept thinking this looks like a tractor just dug a hole in out back Western Australia.. fake snow was TERRIBLE.. Cheesy Australian trite / accents and not very convincing.. would have been more interesting putting some of the trench soil under a microscope

I’m not sure as to why there is so many negative reviews. This film really captures the poignant truth of the war and its effect on Australian culture at the time. These where adolescent men who where sold a false romanticised dream and experienced so much loss and horror. Young men who where forced to make life or death decisions; see their best mates die and loose so much. Those who survived and came back were never truly understood and on some cases created multigenerational trauma.
