Patric N This is the first Charlie Chan movie with sound. And the first with an Chinese/American actor in teh role. Despite being based on a Charlie Chan novel, Charlie has very little screentime and are not a main character. Instead, the movie focuses on the novels backstory and ends where the novel really begins, however it wraps up the story. Unlike the other Charlie Chan moviers, this one is more of a drama thriller than a detective movie. And Charlie is more of a tough guy. A key part of the movies plot, the woman's motivations, was something I didn't really udnerstand and I suspect it had to do with the time the movie was set. It's still a good movie, just not at all what you would expect. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 08/17/25 Full Review Russ G Billed as an early "Charlie Chan" movie but I don't even see the character listed in the credits. It's a very old English talkie, from 1929 in fact. It drags - I cranked the playback speed up to 1 pt 2. It just wasn't holding my attention. It's perhaps an interesting historical relic of the film industry but the style of direction is stilted so I can't see any appeal for modern audiences.
