David Ehrlich indieWire The growing bodycount makes it that much harder to care, but the story is so hard to swallow that our disinterest almost works to its advantage by the end. Rated: C+ Jun 8, 2018 Full Review Scott Marks San Diego Reader Perhaps my love for the original clouded my vision for this version, but damn if I didn't spend more time looking at my watch than I did at the screen. Rated: 1/5 Jun 8, 2018 Full Review Simon Abrams RogerEbert.com Believer doesn't add up to much because Lee and Chung essentially tried to improve something that was already perfectly unsettling. Rated: 2/4 Jun 8, 2018 Full Review Brent McKnight The Last Thing I See "Believer" never soars like the film on which it's based, nor does it hit the highs of other notable South Korean crime thrillers. But if you can find it, this offers a serviceable, engaging, tangled tale of cops and criminals. Rated: B- Jul 1, 2020 Full Review Panos Kotzathanasis Asian Movie Pulse "Believer" is an impressive and quite entertaining action thriller, which highlights the fact that Johnnie To's productions can be very easily adapted to the current style of Korean cinema Oct 27, 2019 Full Review Dominic Griffin Spectrum Culture Believer is an unsettling procedural with flashes of nutty brilliance. Oliver M The Noodle Gangster genre. All over the the place in style and tone. The characters are straight out of whatever acid cartoon was on. Always entertaining and fun. Mr Lee Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 11/21/23 Full Review Tripti G Pretty gritty as a police officer infiltrates a drug cartel. Can be tense at times! Definitely worth watching Rated 4 out of 5 stars 11/20/23 Full Review Mic T Very, very enjoyable. This movie moves a little slower than I expected, but it introduces some very interesting characters. Jo Jin Woong plays a very convincing, hard-boiled, take-no-prisoners, the-end-justifies-the-means, cop. And Ryu Joon Yeol plays a very relatable informant (?) or victim (?), who becomes even more likable as the story progresses. But Cha Seung Won steels the show. The bulk of this movie is about unraveling the mystery of who the mysterious drug kingpin is. It has less action than I expected, but the payoff is all in the end. It is easy to see why Netflix picked up the sequel. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 11/19/23 Full Review Marc Z This is good Korean crime drama about a police officer whose team infiltrates a drug cartel in order to find the person, or people, that killed his informant. The film has good characters. It is violent and gritty. Like all Korean crime films it has a noir quality . The Direction and action and fight choreography are very good. There are many layers to the characters and story in this one. I recommend it. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 10/24/23 Full Review acsdoug D I've become a fan of Korean crime movies, and while there are better ones out there this one is worth watching. Ryu Jun-yeol Is as cool as a cucumber. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 07/13/23 Full Review Audience Member The "surprise" of the movie is really no surprise, as it is obvious from the beginning. Without the surprise, you are left with a few above average shoot out scenes, some crazy antics and and some very dour acting. None of which can carry the movie, which has some serious pacing issues. The director was too focused on the artistic nature of the work, and forgot about the entertainment value of the work. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 01/24/23 Full Review Read all reviews Post a rating
