Amelia Nonemacher Austin Chronicle Belle is marketed as fantasy horror, the exposition is far too thin to transport viewers to another world, and its moments of suspense are generally toothless. Rated: 2/5 Aug 17, 2023 Full Review Randy Myers San Jose Mercury News The actors are spot-on in a hypnotic, sometimes violent take of a classic. Rated: 3/4 Apr 17, 2022 Full Review Calan Panchoo Film Threat Ultimately, Belle is disappointing not because its base elements are lacking but because the director had everything within reach to create a memorable film. Rated: 5/10 Aug 8, 2023 Full Review Don Shanahan Film Obsessive Melding the intimations of fantasy and horror, "Belle" gets down to the nitty-gritty of the classic saga’s dramatic center and its truthfully terrifying undercurrents. Rated: 3/5 Jul 21, 2023 Full Review Steve Biodrowski Cinefantastique Though too low-key for its own good, BELLE ultimately works as an art-house horror film thanks to an ending that fully rewards audience patience. Joel P Sometimes a re-imaging of a classic tale is a good thing. Not this time. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 11/20/24 Full Review Chris M The movie is based on Icelandic magic/folklore/events. A beautiful rendering giving the viewer the opportunity to experience the timeless beauty of the northlands in a not so distant past. A note to the viewer; there are very few places left in Iceland where forest remains and wood "on the whole" was considered quite valuable. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 10/10/24 Full Review Justin Z This was a wonderful portrayal of a classic story. It was unique, original and beautiful! Rated 4 out of 5 stars 07/18/23 Full Review Maxwell G Best experienced on a big TV with a great sound system, Belle will transport you to Iceland for an unexpected journey through the characters eyes. The original Beauty and the Beast myth kind of serves like a a lighthouse on a far shore in the background, while this darker, psychological take on it ventures out into the uncharted depths of Belle's unconscious. This is not a horror film; it's a story of Belle and the Beast navigating the territory that's most terrifying of all: falling in love. Excellent and subtle performances by Ingi (the Beast), Andrea (Belle), Hana (The Witch), incredible cinematography by Nico Navia, resourceful and thoughtful production design by Susan Huyett, deliberate and sophisticated editing by Patrick Lawrence, and glorious score by Matt Orenstein.
