Tim Brayton Antagony & Ecstasy It's trash, literally: something that wasn't good enough for its intended purpose, and so Disney slapped a box on it and charged money for it. SkyRo P Walt Disney's "Beauty and the Beast" is a timeless tale that has captivated audiences with its enchanting story. However, when it comes to sequels, we didn’t receive a true follow-up but rather three direct-to-video films that explored lesser-known events in the castle during quiet moments of the original film. One such sequel is "Beauty and the Beast: The Enchanted Christmas," which attempts to fill in the gaps of the characters’ lives during the holiday season. Unfortunately, this film doesn’t align with the tone or continuity of the original. It feels like a missed opportunity, raising questions about why Disney chose to invest in this project. While it was likely an effort to capitalize on the success of the first film, the result is largely forgotten, with critics echoing this sentiment in their reviews. While "The Enchanted Christmas" may entertain very young children, it lacks the depth and timeless appeal of the original. Once you reach an age beyond six, the film feels overly simplistic and juvenile. In contrast, the third installment, "Belle’s Magical World," does introduce a new character and revolves around Belle reading stories, which is fitting for her character. However, it too suffers from a lack of substance and feels more like a collection of anecdotes rather than a cohesive narrative. Despite being an improvement over "The Enchanted Christmas," "Belle’s Magical World" still doesn’t capture the emotional weight that made the original so special. The friendships and relationships depicted feel underdeveloped and transient, serving more as a vehicle for marketing than as a means to further the story. Ultimately, if a true sequel were to be made, it should have been crafted by the original team behind "Beauty and the Beast." They understood the delicate balance of light and dark, joy and sorrow, which is essential for a compelling narrative. A true continuation of this beloved story deserves the same level of passion and craftsmanship that characterized the original film. Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 11/07/24 Full Review Dale R This is a collection of three 25 minute shorts based on the time Belle spends at Beast’s Castle before they fall for each other and was released straight to home video. The animation in these shorts was done by Disney’s television animation division and isn’t great, but would pass for a cheap television show. Just like the previous installment, Beauty and the Beast: The Enchanted Christmas, this plays a little with the timeline in the original movie. There are two songs that are sung by Belle, neither are memorable and they really don’t serve the narrative in any way. How dare they not give a song to Jerry Orbach! The shorts were three episodes of a failed television series that wouldn’t have worked. Each episode that the Beast is in sees him start as a jerk and warm up to the right idea by the end. Since that already happened in the first movie, seeing that happen over and over every week would have been tedious. I wouldn’t really recommend this “movie” to anyone. I mean, I guess if it's just ironic enjoyment then I can't really argue, but otherwise, I'm genuinely surprised!
