Lariste L A period drama apparently shot 90% in head-and-shoulders close-ups on a cellphone, this film about revenge, blood, period costumes and horses set in the 1820s is simply very strange and disjunctive. Sort of like a first year film student picture where the people are just learning how to switch cameras on and such, and haven't yet realized the student system is limited in it's allowances and they have completed a degree that's quite worthless. That aside, Belly Timber (an archaic term for food) has some well considered, occasionally portentous dialogue and serious dramatic exchanges generally rendered as somewhat distracting or unintentionally absurd due to inept camera work. The costume and props shots suggest this film was something of a missed opportunity, or perhaps the director/writer simply could never make one happen anyways. What is rather odd is that the movie graphic suggests vampires or some other horror cliché - instead a group of cannibals that worship Kala are coming to terrify locals, the idea that they are early American Mongolian settlers is absurd also. WHAT IS UNFORTUNATE is that there's something about the concept and staging that suggests a brain behind what's going on, if only the film didn't look like it was shot on a handheld cellphone, almost exclusively in close-ups. I vote that the occult worshipping cannibals should have eaten "cinematographer" Brian Neal for ruining this movie. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 05/24/23 Full Review Read all reviews
