      Critics Consensus

Smart, vivid, and powerfully acted, Beloved Sisters injects new life into its pretty period tropes and soapy plotting.

Tom Long Detroit News It's epic stuff, and at 170 minutes it's a commitment. Schiller seems to be blazing a trail for German ber-confidence, seeing his modern man as the grand product of all that's been right with history. Rated: B Mar 13, 2015 Full Review Peter Keough Boston Globe If nothing else, "Beloved Sisters" is one of the most visually striking biopics around. Too bad you have to wade through so much verbiage in order to enjoy it. Rated: 1.5/4 Jan 22, 2015 Full Review Michael O'Sullivan Washington Post Without at least the tawdry pleasure of a little bodice ripping, the film moves along sluggishly, even though it is well acted and handsomely shot. Rated: 2/4 Jan 22, 2015 Full Review Tara Judah Overland ...engaging and even arty enough to satisfy. Jan 8, 2019 Full Review M. Faust The Public (Buffalo) It's a respectable, luxurious production that moves quickly for its length, but never quite brings to life a time in history of enormous social and political upheavals that may seem distant to many viewers. Oct 17, 2017 Full Review Sherilyn Connelly SF Weekly The question of whether Dominic Graf's costume drama romance Beloved Sisters needs to be three hours long is an academic one on many levels. Audience Member Too long! Mostly Wimpy Characters. It just doesn't satisfy any of the senses. Fell way short. Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 01/14/23 Full Review Audience Member Rushes along. Interesting times but doesn't settle into a rhythm. Don't like narration. Was the story based on fact? Didn't finish watching. Judging by most reviews, It was OK not to. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 02/22/23 Full Review Audience Member Pretty good - three hours long with lots of detail and a thoroughly believable narrative, although not all based on recorded fact. It appears that Schiller married one sister and had a deep and lasting relationship with the other, too; the rest is dramatic licence. Despite being in German and subtitled, this was absorbing throughout. Lots of detail of eighteenth century printing processes, as well as a complex emotional tale and the historic context. Some nice sexy bits too! (interestingly without any explicit nakedness on screen) Rated 4 out of 5 stars 02/14/23 Full Review Audience Member This movie dragged on and on and on. It really wasn't worth the three hours of my life I can never get back. It promised a great deal and delivered very little. Not even the 'argument' between the two sisters at the end was enough to satisfy the years of built up frustration they endured. This was a major let down. Not worth seeing. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 02/26/23 Full Review Audience Member A Beautiful Love Story that transcends boundaries.... Rated 4 out of 5 stars 01/26/23 Full Review Audience Member Beautifully shot; but it's really too much, too long, too slow for an almost 3 hours long feature.
