The submarine U.S.S. Manta had a perfect record until the mysterious death of its captain. The next-in-command, Lt. Richard Brice (Bruce Greenwood) is determined to steer his disheartened crew back to safety. But after three battle survivors board the sub, bizarre and frightening things begin to happen. As the tale unfolds, and crew members begin to disappear, Ensign Douglas O'Dell (Matthew Davis) must piece together the puzzles of the submarine's past before it is too late to resurface alive.

An intriguing mystery and convincing performances make Below an engrossing horror movie. The claustrophobic setting amplified the tension, and the WWII time period made for some cool vibes. I really enjoyed it.

If you like Dead Calm, you will also love this movie. I personally always lean more into horror than I do drama or thrillers, but this one kept me fully engaged beginning to end. I held my breath with the characters, and panicked when they did. It´s an underrated masterpiece.

The movie comes so close to working, but Twohy can't keep the tone consistent. It doesn't help that he spends so much time developing a supernatural threat, only to abandon it in the finale for a weak resolution to the undercooked mystery behind said threat.

Synopsis
