Craig Mathieson The Age (Australia) The barrier that looms over so many posthumous artist biographies isn't broken through here, but Cutler's documentary does get you close up so you can feel the texture and sense the breadth of that wall. Rated: 3.5/5 Jan 5, 2021 Full Review Josh Flanders Chicago Reader Even though Cutler takes creative license, occasionally using animation and intertitles to insert unnecessary commentary for dramatic effect, the impact of the never-heard-before audio is astounding. Dec 30, 2020 Full Review Ty Burr Boston Globe It is terribly sad and one more reminder that fame on a mass level can be a curse. Why the best ones rarely feel they deserve it remains a mystery this movie doesn't try to solve. Rated: 3/4 Dec 30, 2020 Full Review Bill Brioux Brioux.tv What I couldn’t get enough of, and there’s a lot of it, is the animation. Oct 11, 2022 Full Review Daniel Howat Next Best Picture If you, like me, only know Belushi for his work, R.J. Cutler’s Showtime Documentary “Belushi” will give you a much deeper perspective of the man – not just the performer. Rated: 6/10 May 20, 2022 Full Review Jason Shawhan Nashville Scene Compiled for an oral history that came out a few years back, this film uses those first-person discussions as the framework to reconstruct a life upon, and it adds a great deal of emotional heft. StephenPaul C The greatest 01 hour: and 48 minutes based on the late John Belushi!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 07/05/23 Full Review R B Sad and interesting. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 03/26/23 Full Review Audience Member I dont like most documentaries, especially about individuals, especially about individuals who died young. But Belushi is a fantastic effort to show a mans entire life, good and bad. They are completely honest and dont pull any punches about his troubles and failures and interpersonal issues. I liked the honesty. I loved all the previously unseen photos and vids about his career and private life. It was a wonderful experience not to mention eye opening. highly recommended to both fans and people who dont really know much about the guy at all. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/25/23 Full Review Audience Member This came off as an impressive work on what made up the figure named John Belushi, a legendary entertainer who couldn't keep himself together but left behind a remarkable litany of largely comedic work while losing out on the chance to do so much more quality work. The film uses his early family history, video, journal entries and first-person discussions as the framework to reconstruct a life upon, and it adds a great deal of emotional heft. In what may become the definitive study, audiences are invited into his world which is illuminated by friends and loved ones through frank unencumbered conversation. Ackroyd, Carrie Fisher and especially Judy Belushi provide the most affecting, honest, and insightful commentary here. Well done. 3.8 stars Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 01/20/23 Full Review Audience Member - [ ] Now I know what you're thinking. 2 stars for a legend aka John Belushi. I like John Belushi but man this so called documentary did him no justice. I can tell that theirs not a lot of footage of him to use because of his privacy he needed of course. It just sucks what happened to him. Fame can go to peoples heads and it can ruin someone. That's just how it is. Theirs nothing really that the maker of this documentary could've done differently. So I give them some respect but it doesn't make for an interesting film. I was bored out of my mind and wanted some real insight into the mind of John Belushi but we got none. Gosh dang it but they tried their absolute best. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 02/19/23 Full Review Audience Member - [ ] Now I know what you’re thinking. 2 stars for a legend aka John Belushi.
