Jay Weissberg Variety Some stunning shots and a likable protag can't cover up the story's shallowness. May 15, 2018 Full Review David Rooney The Hollywood Reporter The loose narrative ultimately is secondary to the warmth and generosity of spirit with which Konchalovsky observes this quaint enclave, no doubt destined to disappear over time. May 15, 2018 Full Review Michael Pattison Slant Magazine The film is a low-key comedy of quotidian detail, of ordinary folk surviving long past the point at which they've been forgotten. Sep 26, 2015 Full Review Dennis Harvey 48 Hills It was just as well that he eventually returned to Russian movies...as good as anything [Konchalovkiy] has done. Feb 2, 2021 Full Review David Lamble Bay Area Reporter Russian director Andrei Konchalovsky uses a beautiful corner of his sprawling nation as a backdrop for an affectionate look at a flabby middle-aged mailman... Audience Member The Postman's White Nights is a 2014 Russian drama film directed by Andrei Konchalovsky. The film tells the story of the people of a remote Russian village, whose main contact with the outside world is a postman. It was selected for the In Competition section at the 71st Venice International Film Festival and won the Silver Lion. Vision wrote, although the film received generally positive reviews from critics, I wouldn't go farther than that. All actors in the film are non-professionals, which answers the question to why there was no drama in a drama film. In September 2014, director Konchalovsky withdrew the film from the list of films being considered for the Russian entry for the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film. I wonder why? It felt to me more like a quasi-documentary than a film. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 02/20/25 Full Review Andrew H H A meandering, plotless narrative made good by moments of surreal clarity, and stunning location. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 08/25/23 Full Review Audience Member I cannot give more than two stars. The scenery was gorgeous, would have also wanted to see it in winter though. But, as in many of the russian films, it is just depressing; vodka, madness, vodka. At least in this one there was no corruption, much, and the postman had been sober for 2 years, pretty much the only one in the village though. I keep wondering why the russian ministry of culture finances films that show the current, still soviet style life in the country to the outer world? How are we supposed to feel about it? What are we to think? At the same time, in the back ground you see a missile taking of, so not everyone is poor, miserable and forgotten, clearly. Disturbing and..... depressing. Gorgeous log houses though :) Rated 2 out of 5 stars 01/19/23 Full Review Read all reviews
