Mark Olsen Los Angeles Times Though "Berkeley" may be based on Bobby Roth's own experiences, he filters it through a narrative framework that feels distant and impersonal... Victor O A moment of inspiration has led me to look into Sarah Carter’s filmography and this movie caught my attention. They say you should never judge a book by its cover but seeing Sarah Carter baring her tummy was too much to resist even if the font was written in 1960s hippie font. 1968-1972. Berkeley, California. Ben Sweet is a young man looking to dodge the draft amidst the Vietnam War. Six years into the war has been a trying time for American men surviving while still being seen as productive but the hatred for the conflict has led to an age of men and women living rebelliously in the face of educators, sex, drugs, and rock and roll. Ben is one of many men who grow out their hair long, get high, play music, and get laid. With no prospects out there in the world, just living life avoiding the draft, he makes friends, and lovers but he eventually grows wise thanks to a loving father, and the greatest companion in the world, time. As a conservative who loves studying history, I was expecting so much worse, but this wasn’t half bad at all. The movie doesn’t have much of a story and the acting is pretty bad. It doesn’t know whether it’s a comedy or a drama, with no real cause or reason behind it. My guess this was a testimonial of the many men who lived through the era, and this movie was the celebration of it. Nobody truly stands out other than the veterans like Henry Winkler or Bonnie Bedelia. I do love Sarah Carter, especially at the sight of her baring her goods. Other than that, this wasn’t a great movie, it could have been worse, but it could have been better. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 07/06/25 Full Review Audience Member Felt like a cheesy student film that somehow roped in Henry Winkler and Tom Morello Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 01/31/23 Full Review Audience Member It's a movement. It's a party. It's history. Awesome movie. It really showed the turbulence of the times quite well. There were a few pretty cool scenes, like when there was a concert in the park and people were dancing around so free. Damn those hippies. :) But, it was a nice story overall, and the self-discovery that happens to Ben Sweet was refreshing to see. The rest of the characters in the movie were interesting as well. Plus, I can't forget about the great music that was played. A lot of the songs in the movie were played by Country Joe & the Fish. Although I didn't care much about the ending, this made for a wonderful little film.
