Nico L Michael Head's Bermondsey Tales is a delightful addition to the British gangster genre, embracing its roots with charm and vigor. Despite obvious budget constraints and some noticeable interference in the editing suite, the film shines through its engaging characters and snappy dialogue. You will have a blast with Bermondsey Tales: Fall of the Roman Empire, whist the plot is its own thing and on paper might sound like something that’s been done before and done many times – the tale of a crime family trying to stay afloat and to make money, deals, and not let anyone ‘mug them off’, the style of dialogue, and the level of dialogue humour in the script and performances raised Bermondsey Tales: Fall of the Roman Empire far above that often trodden plot and reminded me a lot of those films I first mentioned and films which are similar to them and it was great to sit down for the evening and laugh my ass off as I watched a crazy bunch of characters living their life, causing chaos and dealing with the chaos caused to them by other crazy characters. Rated 3.5/5 Stars •  Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 05/22/24 Full Review David R J Awful. Have been watching a cross mix of films for over 20 years and I can honestly say this is the winner. Wow. Congratulations Bermondsey, you have produced the worst example of the genre ever produced. Excluding the professionals wheeled in to obviously raise some level of audience, we see woeful acting (on par with the very worst of village hall amateur dramatics), laughable and totally unconvincing fight scenes (presumably coordinated by someone linked to the Carry On franchise) and a weaving story that makes absolutely no sense. The only comedy achieved (yes, it’s bizarrely pitched as a comedy) is just how bad this film is, not least in some of the pathetically weak characters who seem ​totally credential-less as if they won a competition for a day on set (for me, ultra-wooden “Tom” the worst offender along with some guy who was on the Apprentice for 5 minutes clearly ​ w​illing to sell his talentless soul for ​a desperate shot at fame and fortune ) A case of trying to be clever beyond all ability and failing on every single possible level.
