Jeannette Catsoulis New York Times Stingingly attuned to the tension between long-term love and last-minute misgivings, "Between Us" makes a familiar situation feel remarkably fresh. Jan 5, 2017 Full Review Scott Tobias NPR For Between Us to be special, Illingsworth and his leads would have to animate the familiar with the particular, but Dianne and Henry hew too closely to type. Jan 5, 2017 Full Review A.A. Dowd AV Club Feldman, who played Ginsberg on Mad Men, and Thirlby, who's probably still best known as the best friend in Juno, lend shading to characters whose personal and professional lives seem stuck at the first-draft stage. Rated: B- Jan 5, 2017 Full Review Joni Blyth One Room With A View Between Us goes straight for the jugular, offering an acerbic, brutal, and insightful look at a modern-day relationship. With a strong script and two enthralling central performances, this drama is a must-see - although maybe not for date night. Shock Therapy R Kind of the un-"The Break-Up", or the alternate "The Break Up" if they had only physically assaulted each other and vowed their mutual hatred for each other. A dismal portrait and one that no one wants to view because normally it happens incognito and without the direct feelings and actions. Yet the grown up version of this, despite our human frailty, is either don't get married, or don't stay married if you want to cheat. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 03/12/23 Full Review steve d Not as good as the sum of its parts. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 03/30/23 Full Review Audience Member just found it very real as well as entertaining. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 01/14/23 Full Review nilufer e It was alright, was like a less interesting version of 'blue valentine' and the marriage story however it still kept me watching. It was blunt and simple. I could've enjoyed it more with a different cast. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 03/31/23 Full Review Audience Member It’s almost therapeutic how close this movie makes you feel to the characters relationships. If you’re a couple going through it, I suggest keeping an open mind with your partner and enjoy your time with this film it def hit the feels button for me. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 01/22/19 Full Review Audience Member Strengths: One of the things that usually makes a good indie flick is when they're grounded in something real. The relationship between Dianne (Olivia Thirlby) and Henry (Ben Feldman) felt very realistic. Both actors brought a lot of emotion to their roles, really making you feel for their situation and making it relatable. The dialogue, chemistry, and rapport between all the main cast members is great, which adds a fair amount to the overall enjoyment of the film. The paths their issues take them down is interesting. He ends up with a fan of his work, Veronica (Analeigh Tipton), and a potential orgy; while she falls into the arms of a married man (Adam Goldberg). When things come to a head near the end, you can feel some of that heartbreak. Weaknesses: It's interesting that Dianne and Henry are concerned with their relationship becoming cliché or commonplace, because that in itself is commonplace. Since a lot of these romantic indie films are so similar, you have to do something special to standout. While the movie hits the right notes, they all feel too familiar and in line with other stuff that's already out there. Also, as good as the actors are, there seemed to be a lack of allowing them to be funny. For a romantic comedy, even a more serious one, there really aren't many laughs. That's a shame as a few more of those could've really evened things out. Overall: While this is a good movie with true emotion about a realistic relationship, it all just feels too familiar. It doesn't do enough to distinguish itself among the crowded genre it resides in. A good way to spend an hour and a half, though you probably won't consider it a memorable night.
