Anton Bitel Little White Lies Fulci traps everyone in his illogical, uncanny canvas of errant ideas and associations. Jan 13, 2020 Full Review Nick Schager Lessons of Darkness Atmosphere alone can't keep this creaky pseudo-zombie flick from rapidly decaying into confusing, derivative tedium. Rated: C Sep 3, 2005 Full Review Ed Gonzalez Slant Magazine Even by Argento standards, Fulci's film is nonsensical to the point of distraction. Rated: 1.5/4 Nov 5, 2002 Full Review Guillem Martinez Oya Cinematismo An horror cult film about the truth hidden among the fake things. [Full review in Spanish] Rated: 4/5 May 15, 2025 Full Review Sean Axmaker Stream on Demand It’s mad and eerie and borderline insane, and of course features [director Lucio] Fulci’s claim to fame—ocular horror—in abundance. Oct 21, 2024 Full Review Al Topich Arkansas Democrat-Gazette The Beyond is one of those films that comes along from time to time that can move you -- both intellectually and emotionally -- with its images. Nick O Mondo creepy Italian zombie flick set in Louisiana on the seventh gate of hell! Very weird and VERY gory…just the way we like it! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 06/27/25 Full Review Mark J Really struggled with this. I did like it enough and it did invoke unease well. Just, the story doesn’t appear to exist. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 05/26/25 Full Review Omar G The Beyond (1981). The plot about the house was like the houses of the Three Mothers by Nicolodi-Argento . The best film by Lucio Fulci, I like the elegant style of the Italian directors with close-ups like in Catriona MacColl's eyes. The remembered deaths for the visual like that of Dr. Harris with the crystals as if they were thrown knives, the violent death of Emily was like the death of the blind man in Suspiria (1977) but improved, the German shepherd dog rips the neck of his master, Jill aged 12-13 with a shot blows her head off. As well as the death of Marta which was like of Olga Karlatos' character with the splinter in her eye in Zombi (1979) and the death of the guy devoured by tarantulas. The end seems to be in Cocytus in the Divine Comedy. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 02/24/25 Full Review Justin T This is a better than average Italian horror but a below average horror. There is just no sense of horror or fear. There is plenty of bloody gore but little in the way of story or suspense. One or two bits made me jump and much of the violence was sickening but nothing really lasting. I still think that the only acceptable Italian horror film by all standards is Zombie Flesh-Eaters (1979). Rated 2 out of 5 stars 11/07/24 Full Review Tasos L An atmospheric flick by Fulci. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 11/05/24 Full Review Brian M Deconstructionist horror film that plays fast and loose with laws of narrative causality. Instead of a logical plot, it operates like a poem, progressing via imagery, refrains, and repetition to present creepy moments, snippets of dialogue, and gore so gratuitous and rendered in such detail as to be pornographic. It’s as though the film is insisting that coherence isn’t necessary when it comes to the gothic. To top it off, the emphasis on eye mutilation serves as a kind of metacommentary on the privileging of illogic over logic. Very unique film!
