Ryan Gilbey New Statesman Beyond Clueless may be messy in places but it's also strange, occasionally disorienting and full of flashes of madness. Not unlike adolescence itself. Feb 2, 2015 Full Review Mark Kermode Observer (UK) The central arguments about the codified rules of high-school interaction lack focus and (most importantly) context, pinballing around with plenty of bell-ringing pizzazz but precious little analytical bite. Rated: 3/5 Jan 25, 2015 Full Review Kate Muir Times (UK) The film deep-mines those American high-school tropes, from bullying at the lockers and cold-shouldering in the cafeteria to panicking about the prom, and, of course, sexual awakening. Rated: 4/5 Jan 23, 2015 Full Review Rachel Brook One Room With A View Beyond Clueless frequently provokes nostalgic joy whilst also inspiring further cinematic discovery. Rated: 3/5 May 17, 2019 Full Review Edward Frost CineVue Beyond Clueless is a remarkable redressing of the cinema essay style of filmmaking, combining a brilliantly written and scholarly script with an intellectually stimulating approach. Rated: 4/5 Apr 4, 2019 Full Review Tracy Moore Common Sense Media Teen film genre docu features sex, profanity, violence. Rated: 2/5 Jun 2, 2015 Full Review Read all reviews

Jeffery Charles N When I first thought about watching this I thought it was going to be a fun exploration of tropes in movies about high school. However, what it ended up being was a super pretentious, overly self important, melodramatic video essay full of the most cringe narration and verbose language which was made about a fantasy land where these film tropes are actually real. It's weird that it was made this way because it assumes that everyone who watches it will go along with it's false premise that high school is actually like it's portrayal in films and TV. We all went to high school so we all know that the jocks didn't rule the school or the preppy kids didn't only hang out with each other and so on. I mean, I was into punk rock and hung out with other kids into punk rock but I also went to parties with rednecks, and so called "preppy kids." My friend had a mohawk and dated a girl nominated for prom queen. I understand on film it might make for a better story if we all pretended that social groups didn't mix and so on, but this "documentary" was apparently supposed to be about what it was really like in high school. I really can't imagine who made this, or what their high school experience was like, but I know they didn't make any attempt to portray real life in this trash. Apart from the delusional premise, and the hyperbolic verbose nature of the narration, which is cringe enough to make this hard to get through, it's just badly edited and the music is the worst kind of poser indie rock. It's just too hard to watch. It's painful. This is bad from top to bottom. Just too cringe, don't subject yourself to the torture of having to sit through this. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 10/27/24 Full Review Audience Member 2.0/5.0 stars Much darker than I was expecting. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 02/06/23 Full Review Audience Member A very alternative experience than I had anticipated. The soundtrack is a particular highlight. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 01/29/23 Full Review Audience Member OK but just seems to give abbreviated plot points and doesn't really give much in the way of insight or analysis Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 01/21/23 Full Review Audience Member Baby director Charlie Lyne is a mere twenty-four years young, but the guy has already found his footing in the world of film. A constant contributor to faire such as Buzzfeed, Vice, and The Guardian, Lyne understands the complexities and nuances of modern filmmaking as well as the nostalgia that we millennials crave. In his first full-length film Lyne tackles the teen genre of filmmaking, ranging from comedy, to horror, to drama, looking to the undercurrent that threads together all these films for the core teen audience.
