John DeFore The Hollywood Reporter Good-looking but dimwitted sci-fi. Steve W The plot and storyline did my head in! Certainly different in concept but the movie jumped from scenario to scenario with no real fluid motion. E.g. A great haul of valuable "space whale" by the crew and then "suddenly" a group of 5 (or was it more) space pirates (who look like they weren't the smartest of the bunch) casually dock onto the ship and just take everything. No explanation, no fight, no effort. Good concept, not bad acting - but the continuity and reasoning of the storyline left me confused. And trust me, as a Sci-fi lover I've sat through some pretty craape movies in the hope they might be an absolute gem. PS Watched it on "Prime" and as usual their subtitles for those that require them are "expletive" ridiculous. In the middle of a scene, a character fires a gun at the guy stealing the secret plans and exclaims "what are you doing with my chocolate"? I pity others with hearing issues. The alien special effects and the "space working fishermen" aesthetic are pretty good. The world-building is not bad at all. The fake-customs-agent who really wants to be mystically cured of her inoperable cancer is a weird twist. The action rollicks along at a reasonable pace and it isn't too long. Never the less, it manages to convey a strong sense of "soap opera" with the dialog and character interactions, rather than the "space opera" that it is shooting for. A pleasant enough diversion. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 03/31/23 Full Review Audience Member So bad. Like so many of the reviewers…I love the genre and the concepts so much…I was ready to accept the super cliche cast of characters. I then forced myself to accept that no single individual in the movie had me rooting for them…the guy cheating on his wife? The haunted wooden captain who should turn out to have a heart of gold under the gruff exterior (I'll save you…he's an ass throughout). Not even the mysterious agent with cancer who sneaks on board ever really evolves. All to hunt a creature who only seems to kill ships when they attack it (think Japanese whaling…not Moby Dick). But I like the genre so much (translation I've seen everything in it and know my shit)…that I can't help but comment that with a real director (one not fit for YouTube skits like this moron)…this could have been a great movie (little better writing, lengthen it so at least something or someone's character can get at least partly flushed out)…..instead…he let this be edited into an entirely incoherent and pointless mess! I've literally heard better tales from my 10yo sons at bedtime (granted they are left-handed so naturally better at creatively and coherence this this silly director but come on). Investors…this wasn't cheap so I'd sue the Director for theft. He screwed you…I can overlook incompetence somewhat…but he did this to spew garbage and run off with his coffee girl to Cambodia. Call him…guarantee this director is off the grid now. Horrid incoherent mess…skip it (from a man who is head of a hospital, loves the genre…and grants huge leniency to anything in my beloved space epic genre.) So bad. So…bad. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 01/28/23 Full Review Audience Member The beginning was fairly ok with some decent atmosphere of the story. Past the 30 minute mark the story, characters, and plot goes down from there. Got to about 4/5 into the movie before I just started to jumped forward ever 5 minutes to get overview of the ending. More disappointed then usual since it started out ok before turning into garbage. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 02/02/23 Full Review George F This satiric Moby Dick in space follows the tragically obsessed male captain, who seeks revenge against the transdimensional space whale that killed his father. He is at cross purposes with a dying, female Ishmael/Queequeg figure who seeks to be healed by following the whale into its native "white space," where everything is made physically and spiritually pure and whole. It's a fascinating Godawful mess that along the way lampoons seagoing monsters, bug-eyed monsters, cigar-chomping military heroes and redemptive parenthood. Yes, the (lady) Ishmael analog does witness the tale from opening scene to conclusion and does survive in an appropriately coffin-like hibernation pod, apparently healed, to tell it. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 12/19/21 Full Review Audience Member Great budget SciFi movie in the tradition of 70s, 80s, and 90s budget SciFi films that first got me hooked on SciFi books and movies in the first place. Interesting camera visuals of space with fantastic light exposure hitting the camera making it feel like it was actually filmed in space and original sets world build very well and do not leave you feeling it is a recycled world of other movies. The story is Moby Dick in space. Captain Ahab meets a space whale sounds like a done and dusted concept, but it is a great fresh take on an old story that was a joy to watch. They took the time to introduce all of the main characters so you actually care if they live or die which is missing in a lot of big budget Hollywood movies nowadays. I wasn't left with a thought the Captain was a villain or a hero, I was given an insight into his past and how that led his decisions throughout the film and why despite caring for his crew he had to hunt his whale.
