Joey O'Bryan Austin Chronicle Rated: 0/5 Jan 1, 2000 Full Review Roger Ebert Chicago Sun-Times In the right role, Olivia d'Abo would be irreplaceable. She has never found that role. Here, struggling gamely with the hopelessly predictable Big Green, she shows a quality that in another role, in another picture, could be luminous. Dale R The underdog team must come together to win and learn some life lessons along the way. This type of movie has been done a few too many times, and this one is good, not great, just good. A teacher from England is teaching in a small Texas town for a semester and to motivate her students she forms them into a soccer team. Steve Guttenberg plays the county deputy sheriff that helps co-coach the soccer team. There is a love story between him and the teacher and also a love story between two of the students and neither is fleshed out very well. The DVD box cover and thumbnail for this movie is a little misleading as I thought it was going to be a screwball comedy, but there really isn't any screwball comedy in the film and it has some serious dramatic moments. I felt there were too many background stories of the characters that prevented any of them from developing into real story arcs. However, what was presented was interesting and well done. The reaction shots for the coaches and crowds felt generic and randomly added throughout the movie, like they weren’t really watching the game. I think there is enough good stuff here to recommend a single viewing. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 07/07/24 Full Review Priyo W Very entertaining and very motivating movie the 0% rating is by the salty movie critics that always hates this type of movie genre Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/05/24 Full Review Jeffrey M The Big Green was a bad movie. I watched it just know and it was really bad. The Big Green was highly unrealistic. If that teacher did that in real life, something bad would happen to her. I practically agree with the audience for this movie. It was way too cheesy too. The actor, Bug Hall, the only movies I've watched and he has been in are really bad. The three movies he has been in that I watched are this movie, Little Rascals, and Honey We Shrunk Ourselves. Also The Big Green is not funny at all. It's supposed to be a comedy, but it is not really funny at all. What a bad movie. I give this a 47%. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 09/16/23 Full Review StephenPaul C LOL, the funniest 01 hour: and 39 minutes ever!!!!!!!!!!!! Rated PG for Comic Violence, and Some Mild Language. Starring Steve Guttenberg as a sheriff in Austin, Texas, and Bug Hall as the soccer player who wins in shootouts in the final round of the Texas State elementary school soccer tournament. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 04/12/23 Full Review steve d Deeply unfunny, even by the standards of kid's sports comedies. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 03/30/23 Full Review jacob b A generic, clichéd sports film that's not as memorable as The Mighty Ducks trilogy or even Angels in the Outfield for that matter but is far too harmless to be considered remarkably awful. It's just another Disney sports comedy from back when Cool Runnings and The Mighty Ducks were hits from an age before they matured with more dramatic true-story films with Remember the Titans in 2000. The football (or "soccer" for you simple-minded Americans) sequences are okay, the actors do their job just fine and it was a nice touch that the goalkeeper imagines the opposing team as ninjas, Vikings, etc. It was the one original idea this movie had. The Big Green is just a movie that exists. She's the Man was a better football-themed comedy. The fact that this came out first is irrelevant.
