Joe Leydon Variety Much like most of the songs performed by the band whose misadventures drive its wispy plot, Big in Japan comes off as pleasantly diverting, vaguely familiar and instantly disposable. Mar 11, 2015 Full Review John Hartl Seattle Times What's missing is something to hold it all together: a sense of style, a consistent comic perspective, a leading man with charisma. Rated: 2/4 Feb 19, 2015 Full Review Brian Miller Seattle Weekly Certainly Big in Japan has its promotional aspect, but few films (or bands) manage the trick of both wanting to be liked and actually being likable. Nov 12, 2015 Full Review Michael D. Reid Victoria Times Colonist (B.C., Canada) While the novelty wears thin as contrivances mount in the home stretch, there's enough fun, charisma and witty sight gags along the way to keep you on board. Audience Member Pretty boring and didn't even finish it Rated 1 out of 5 stars 01/24/23 Full Review Audience Member Hilarious and heartwarming. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/01/23 Full Review Audience Member Fun. It's a trip to Japan with a few married friends whose wives stayed home - nothing out of control, but still a satisfying good time. It's a small adventure that rings true with a documentary style about a band struggling in their home town who decide to take an opportunity in Japan. They have some minor mishaps and a few things that may cause some trouble for the band, but they forge on. It's like a doc that's been shot as a romantic comedy. The smooth filming style gives it an elegance, and altho likeable, there is a blandness to the leads, but still just enough flash and panache to keep it light and humming along. It's more adventure than comedy, but interesting if only for the trip overseas and the intriguing minor characters that are filled with a very light, but still warm glow. 3.5 poppy punk guitar riffs out of 5 Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 01/12/23 Full Review Audience Member Funny, real, unexpected, heartfelt, and the music was good, too.
