Her inclusion in the formerly all-male team causes quite a stir, especially with her father (Jim Backus). He is typically supportive of Billie, but now he worries that her shocking behavior will cost him his bid for mayor. Audience Member Unfunny, LOL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 01/28/23 Full Review Audience Member Charming teen musical from 1965, just before the era got very serious. Patty Duke is an offbeat choice for Billie Carol, the heroine of Ronald Alexander's suburban tomboy classic. Her haired dyed blonde (it's not a wig) and squeezed into shorty-shorts, she's cute and sympathetic as a young girl becoming a woman, trying to balance athletic interests with first romance. The rest of the cast is an agreeable who's who of TV sitcoms of the era, all sharing screen time with lovely Jane Greer of film noir fame as Billie's mom. Some spirited dance numbers by Broadway pros add zest, as does the Technicolor/Panavision cinematography. Earnest as always, Patty puts heart and soul into a few sweet songs, and actually had a side career as a pop singer during this period. BILLIE was a UA movie, now owned by MGM and Ms. Duke herself, together with producer Peter Lawford's heirs. Note: the pictured DVD is a pan-and-scan version.. Proper widescreen versions of BILLIE can be downloaded or caught on TCM every now and again. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 01/15/23 Full Review Audience Member another 'gidget' knock off Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 01/21/23 Full Review Audience Member This was a cute story about a tom boy coming of age. I love Patty Duke, but this wasn't her strongest role. The writing was sub par, and the camera editing very poor at times, but I thought she did more with the role than anyone else probably could have. She also had her singing debut, which had a particularly touching scene of her singing "Butterflies". Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 02/18/23 Full Review Audience Member great fun movie can you hear the beat.... Rated 4 out of 5 stars 02/27/23 Full Review Audience Member Very much a product of its time this is a simple little comedy that feels like a Disney movie even though made for MGM. Patty Duke is an actress of almost limitless acting ability but having her sing, not among her gifts, was a mistake and the blonde wig she wears is a horror.
