Audience Member A heartfelt and sad film about five bothers and their fates, intertwined with the fate of the Ukraine. Yuri Ilyenko is a genius at making movies that feel like you're just watching a beautiful oil painting moving in front of you. He was also keeping Ukrainian history alive at a time when that was (almost still is) fairly subversive. In that sense, this movie is worth watching for the insight into Hutsul culture (and that crazy manic music, oh my god) alone. The camera work here is also breathtaking - from the dizzying dancing scenes, to an insane scene of rafting down a wild river (how many cameras were lost in that one, I wonder) - see it if you can in its original 70 mm. And if that's not enough to get you interested, there's also the wonderful character development, beautifully ornate outfits, amazing symbolism and political commentary scattered throughout. Dare ya to check out this wedding scene and tell me you're not intrigued: youtu.be/EVi91LgAAeI?t=3m55s Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/06/23 Full Review Read all reviews
