Critics Consensus

Bird Box never quite reaches its intriguing potential, but strong acting and an effectively chilly mood offer intermittently creepy compensation.

Peter Rainer FilmWeek (LAist) Should have been called "Bird-brained." Sep 12, 2019 Full Review Kristen Lopez Zimbio Finale aside, Bird Box is a taut thriller that keeps you hooked. Feb 24, 2019 Full Review Roxana Hadadi Pajiba Bird Box, led by a strong Sandra Bullock, does a solid job of telling a story that compares the desire to destroy oneself with the constantly challenging nature of being a parent. Feb 7, 2019 Full Review Bryce Hanson Horror Movie Talk The acting is excellent throughout, as well as the direction. The story and thematic material are handled adeptly while maintaining a steady pace of tension and release. You should definitely see it. Blu B It's alright. Cinematography isn't bad and probably the best thing. IT can be a bit dull to look at times. Some scenes are kind of stupid but there are occasional moments of clever situations that coem up. The ending is alright enough but it just starts to drag. Direction is decent to. Everything else is ok. Man I will say the acting in the first half is extremely shaky for some odd reason. Like the performances in general remind of something like The Happening with how bizarre it can come across at first. The dialouge is also extremely shaky as well though it does get better as the runtime goes further along which is usch a weird thing to say. There also is way too many characters in this as well and some are more memorable than others. They should've just done 4 or so instead of 9-10. Another thing is the out of order storytelling with the journey down the river and flashbacks to being held up in the house. It really adds nothing to the overall story. Easily this could've been old in a normal linear fashion. The ending again does drag it feels like as well. Finally, the "Thing" that is comiing after them is never really clear and if anything inconsistent. At first we are led to believe it's people than it's like abberitiion, and than it's sort of like both. It's not really clear and makes things inconsistent. Besides that it's pretty standard "zombie" survival type stuff with overall generic characters that don't stand out with nothing really deep about it. Skip this. It's not broken at all but it doesn't really do anything particulary good either. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 10/02/25 Full Review Aluna U Bird Box, adapted from Josh Malerman’s novel, presents a chilling premise of an invisible entity that drives people to suicide upon seeing it. The film uses a dual-timeline narrative effectively, balancing present danger with the origin of the chaos. While the internal group conflicts and tension are well-handled, the logic behind the creature’s effects and selective immunity leaves some ambiguity. Strong performances, especially from Sandra Bullock, and detailed direction enhance the film’s impact. Though intriguing, the film leaves room for deeper exploration of its mythos and psychological depth. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 09/30/25 Full Review Ale C I didnt like the ending but man, did i love this movie. Paulson is there, that made 3 points already. Good acting and very very original idea. Love Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 09/04/25 Full Review Shayan K really didn't like truck scene at the start, quite traumatic I must say, take it out and it's a solid 4/10 Rated 1 out of 5 stars 08/19/25 Full Review Michael D What a horrendous waste of camera crews and oxygen. I found myself rooting for the monsters to eat Sandra Bullock. Her acting career should be revoked and she should be forced to pay stiff fines for crimes against the senses.
