Critics Consensus

Black '47 anchors its grim and gritty action in deceptively deep genre storytelling, although its epic ambitions arguably exceed its grasp.

Director and co-writer Lance Daly tells a blunt-force story in blunt-force fashion, draining the color from both landscape and denizens, and spelling out details in dialogue where he thinks it might be helpful. Go to Full Review

That it all works as well as it does is as much a testament to the crackerjack cast as it is to Daly's brooding, violently controlled direction. Go to Full Review

Sheree B @SBrea 4h Absolutely gripping from opening scene to ending. Tells an incredibly important tale of Irish history and helps explain why Irish still feel so much wrath towards the British. Every land across the earth has felt the anger and pain of dislocation, the forced removal and loss of language, culture, freedom, and Ireland is no different. If we forget history and its mistakes, we learn nothing. So well acted, so well done. A brilliant film. See more John D. @johndoe Sep 13 Not as good as the John Wick movies or Sisu, but in that style, and good enough to turn your brain off, relax, and watch a bunch of bad guys get what’s coming to them. If you’re in the mood for that kind of movie then this will definitely scratch the itch for you. It's now a part of our families tradition of watching Irish cultural movies that we can connect to the stories of our ancestors and the brutality and abuses they suffered. Great movie! See more Thomas S 11/17/2023 As a descendant of the Irish people who were forced to migrate, I found this very moving and uplifting at the same time. It doesn't hide from the fact that the British could have helped instead of taking advantage of See more John B 10/16/2023 It was good overall as it was interesting to see how the people of Ireland lived in 1847 during the famine of the potato crops they depended on. Good story as we see the Ranger trying to bring justice to the land run by England & the injustice to the people of Ireland See more Read all reviews
