Christopher Smith Bangor Daily News (Maine) Steven Segal--still chopping (it's a struggle), still kicking (it's exhausting), still in a career slump (it's over, cookie). Rated: D Feb 3, 2006 Full Review David Nusair Reel Film Reviews Make no mistake, Black Dawn isn't good by any stretch of the imagination - but it's certainly a substantial improvement over some of Seagal's more recent efforts. William D This is absolutely one of the worst films I have ever seen. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 11/27/23 Full Review Audience Member Like so many other Steven Seagal later releases, I can't say this is his worst, but it certainly isn't his best. As far as "bleh" or completely forgettable, this one ranks with the best of 'em, though. I will at least say this about Black Dawn, though: at least he called in his own lines and didn't hire a voiceover to do them. Seagal does all his fighting in this movie with a gun; don't look for any Aikido scenes or a lot of hand-to-hand... well, actually, there was one scene, but...(no, that makes no sense).... I don't know; there was one scene where an unnamed, faceless person (seriously, they only showed the combatants from the waist down so you never saw who was actually doing the "fighting") was kicking butt against like four other attackers; you would have thought it was Seagal, but flash-forward to the next scene where Seagal's character is walking calmly down a corridor...in a completely different suit, so....??? Still not sure what that was all about? Apart from that one very confusing scene (where absolutely nothing in the way of actual hand-to-hand combat was seen, only some bodies jostling around, and no faces) there were no hand-to-hand fight scenes. I guess Seagal is getting too long in the tooth to even pretend anymore. What a shame; he used to be really exciting to watch but now he can't even fake a fight. COMPLETELY unremarkable and very non-memorable. I'll probably not even remember watching this one, but I'm making notes here so I won't make the mistake of watching it again. PS: Why the title Black Dawn is anyone's guess. PSS: This movie really just sucked. Not as much as some of his others, but it still sucked. You have been warned. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 02/27/23 Full Review Audience Member This is very standard Steven Seagal stuff, so fans may enjoy it, however it's very low-budget and it shows. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 02/06/23 Full Review lars p Short summary of the last 20 Steven Seagal movies: 1. He's ex-CIA/Navy-Seal (flash-backs at start of movie) 2. GF killed by bad guys (lots of flash-backs) 3. The government needs his extra 100 pounds to knock out the bad guys 4. Logic of the story reinforced by lots of close combat, despite ample heavy weapons floating around. 5. Look out for a few katanas, meditation & Buddhist stuff. 6. Bad guy always killed in the last 5 minutes in hand-to-hand combat. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 03/31/23 Full Review Audience Member This film had problems when Steven walked out of the shoot after 18 days and thus all fight scenes required a double and stunt personnel. The film is well photographed but the acting fails to come up to any real standard as such this is ranked as a TV movie fill in. The plot is engaging and may keep you to the end. Music is cheap and cheerful. Nibbles: Roasted Red Cabbage. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 02/22/23 Full Review Read all reviews
