John Anderson indieWire No one deserves what happens to them in "Black Mountain Side," but as the deer-head deity would tell you, no one ever said it all had to make sense. Rated: C+ Mar 1, 2019 Full Review Sarah Gopaul Digital Journal The key to making a relatively low-budget movie is an exceptional script and competent casting director. This picture benefits with a considerable measure of both. Oct 21, 2020 Full Review Rob Hunter Film School Rejects A beautifully-shot, creepy love letter to John Carpenter's The Thing that finds its own identity amid the paranoia and bloodletting. Mar 1, 2019 Full Review Deirdre Crimmins Film Thrills Black Mountain Side... is a great surprise. Aug 21, 2018 Full Review Sarah Boslaugh PopMatters ....the tone is inconsistent, the plot meandering, and the whole film is just way too long. Rated: 4/10 Aug 1, 2015 Full Review Read all reviews

Dean M Slow paced, low budget, poor, acting, waste of time. Sometimes I forget to look to see how many reviews a movie has. I think five is the minimum to receive a tomatometer rating. It seems like films with six or less reviews, have been reviewed by the six people that the director knows personally or something… Because Every time I watch a Movie with less than six reviews, it usually sucks. It's a little more difficult to pay two or 300 people to review your movie favorably... I should've read the reviews from customers. Nobody likes this movie. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 01/19/25 Full Review Denise J 80% really? Had a better rating than “the ritual” which is a phenomenal scary movie. I tried to watch this movie over the course of 2 days. I kept falling asleep. It’s so slow and so boring. Didn’t even know what the hell was happening half of the time. A talking deer? It’s so lame. The acting was whatever, I just can’t get past the awful story line. Didn’t explain anything, no scary scenes, no good shots. Didn’t make sense. Everyone dies. Lame deer voice. Don’t waste your time like I did. Go watch “the ritual” instead. HORRIBLE! Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 01/07/25 Full Review Dan W Not sure how these pop up on my Google News feed, but must be my interest in folk horror. Anyway, it was one of those, "Best Underrated film of blah blah blah", and I should have searched out reviews before purchasing the rental. Not having researched it, I didn't know it was an indie film... until I knew it was an indie film. I guess a combo of certain actors and script told me after a few scenes. But, hey, I root for the underdog, so I pushed on. It was a great set to work off surrounded by cinematic mountains. I guess it came down to story and pacing for me. I appreciate the FX, well done, but placed in a rocky story with odd timing and reactions - i had to bail on the movie I'm sad to say. Plus. Nobody ever closed the door! It's -50 degrees out there my guys! Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 01/03/25 Full Review Randal K Poor acting, poor script. The one good thing I can say about it is that it will make you appreciate other films that get it right. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 01/01/25 Full Review Joel P Well, that was a waste of time. Chain smoking, beer drinking, porn loving, so-called “archeologists” (more like construction workers) become unhinged in the Great White North. Nothing memorable worth mentioning. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 11/05/24 Full Review Tom L Well-crafted eco/cosmic horror film that creates a slowly advancing sense of dread. A little slow getting started, but the writing is good with believable characters. There are a few confusing plot points but in general the element of the weird is effective. It’s never clear whether the characters are all suffering from a parasite or disease that their excavation has unearthed, or whether there actually is a malign cosmic entity menacing them. The open ended question and the bleak ending make for a dark but potent conclusion. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 10/25/24 Full Review Read all reviews
