Werewolf horror with some extra socially conscious bite, Blackout reaffirms Larry Fessenden as a smart genre filmmaker who prioritizes character-building over kills.

Michael R Surprisingly good film! Great story, great cast - this is far better than your average horror film. I instantly recognized the actor playing Charlie, Alex Hurt, as the son of William Hurt. He’s a very good actor. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 04/28/24 Full Review Thom G The aesthetics, poetry, music, and philosophical reflections, along with the social commentary, make Blackout a distinctly unique werewolf movie. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 04/27/24 Full Review Elizabeth R Loved this movie. Everything was amazing from the storyline, the art, the acting, and costume and makeup. I love the original idea that the werewolf would paint the things he could remember. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 04/16/24 Full Review B P Larry Fessenden's Werewolf Tale Offers a Slice-of-Life Movie With a Horror Twist Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 04/15/24 Full Review Jay G Larry Fessenden's Blackout was a masterclass in how to make a classic horror film using ingenuity and creativity. The werewolf himself was incredibly well done. He was the right blend of frightening and believable. If one were to find themselves as Charlie, the wolf stricken lead character, the lead actor Alex Hurt played the part perfectly. Charlie as a Fine Arts painter was a brilliant addition as it allowed the movie to shine in its creativity. The way Fessenden used the beautiful array of landscape paintings and drawings throughout the movie juxtaposed with Charlie's schizophrenic painting style as he became altered was intense and really satisfying. The transformation through ink drawings verse CGI or makeup was smart and eye catching. We all thoroughly enjoyed this film and I'll definitely watch it again. This movie has all the makings to stand the test of time in the annals of Indie horror films. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 03/16/24 Full Review Read all reviews Post a rating

Robert Abele Los Angeles Times The idiosyncratic earnestness of an experienced horrormeister playing with the classics still makes for a substantial midnight snack. Apr 15, 2024 Full Review Adam Nayman Reverse Shot In the parlance of our times: if Larry Fessenden has no more fans, then I am no longer on this Earth. Mar 21, 2024 Full Review Simon Abrams RogerEbert.com “Blackout” is nothing new, or even essential, but it mostly works anyway thanks to Fessenden and his cast’s impressive collaboration. Rated: 2.5/4 Mar 14, 2024 Full Review Dennis Harvey 48 Hills Indeed, there’s so much going on here, Blackout sometimes forgets to be a horror movie—that element as well as various character dramas and social-commentary themes all jostle for attention, none getting fully developed as a result. Apr 17, 2024 Full Review Cody Leach Cody Leach (YouTube) Blackout is my first experience with Fessenden's work and unfortunately it wasn't a good one. The old-school werewolf design was neat but the script is both dull and drawn out. Even the more intense sequences are muddled with a very odd execution. Rated: 1/5 Apr 16, 2024 Full Review Thomas Lethbridge Screen Rant Blackout's noble message, interesting material, and ambition are masked by a muddled story that fails to engage the viewer.
