Critics Consensus

Misunderstood when it first hit theaters, the influence of Ridley Scott's mysterious, neo-noir Blade Runner has deepened with time. A visually remarkable, achingly human sci-fi masterpiece.

Pauline Kael The New Yorker This movie loses track of the few expectations it sets up, and the formlessness adds to a viewer's demoralization -- the film itself seems part of the atmosphere of decay. Sep 19, 2023 Full Review Scott Cain Atlanta Journal-Constitution Ridley Scott ought to be a set decorator, rather than a director. In Blade Runner, he loses sight of the story while devoting all his attention to decor and lighting. The decor and lighting, it must be admitted, are stupendous. Rated: 3/5 Nov 9, 2021 Full Review Zaki Hasan San Francisco Chronicle Still profound 18 years after its sell-by date, Blade Runner remains worthy of acclaim and analysis even as it exists in a "future" with very little resemblance to the one that came to pass. Nov 18, 2019 Full Review Clotilde Chinnici Loud and Clear Reviews Thanks to its powerful visuals and brilliant acting, it is a movie that does not get old: no matter how many times you revisit it, there will always be some new elements or symbolism that stand out with each rewatch. Rated: 4.5/5 Sep 14, 2024 Full Review Matt Brunson Film Frenzy Rarely in the annals of film history has a movie received a complete critical and popular reevaluation in as short a period of time as Blade Runner (and those of us who championed it since Day One plugged it at every opportunity). Rated: 4/4 Aug 20, 2024 Full Review Dennis Harvey 48 Hills One of the 1980s greatest sci-fi films—or greatest films, period. Jan 12, 2024 Full Review Read all reviews

Jack F Yup, just like when it first came out, no one liked it. Including me. It's boring, and hard to understand. MAYBE, JUST MAYBE I'll watch it again. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 11/17/25 Full Review Uncle R. A brilliant film with a fantastic aesthetic. For 1982, they did a wonderful job portraying the future dystopia. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 11/12/25 Full Review Patrick C Saw it aged 13 when it came out and didn't like it. Rewatched it 43 years later and still didn't. Visually it's very impressive but it reminded me of an extended pop video on a huge budget. I think my biggest problem is that I felt totally unengaged with the film's premise and characters. To whom am I supposed to relate and for what purpose? So many viewers cite this as a masterpiece but even after a four decade gap I found it a classic exercise of style over substance. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 11/10/25 Full Review xpig332 B It bored the hell outa me when it came out and 43 years later it’s still slow. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 11/02/25 Full Review Clare M The music makes the film as much as the story. I can watch it again and again just for the music. It's perfect if you want a slow relaxing sci-fi not a blazing fast shoot out. The let downs is that there are a few holes in the plot like how many replicants reached earth? I also pity Scott had to predict 2019 - the fashion, the social scenes, the technology, the climate. Because obviously now we can mock this whereas in the 80's we wouldn't have. So you have to allow for this and not judge it. Bladerunner 2049 will also age! There's also a few disturbing scenes with eyes being pushed in and where Deckard 'forces himself' onto Rachel. But apart from those issues the characters are superb and unique. Very well cast. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 10/25/25 Full Review Brian H Probably my favourite film, and in terms of how it looks and the special effects, it still holds up decades later. Soundtrack is fantastic. Definitely prefer the version without the voice over as i don't think anything needs explaining in this film. Brilliant!! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 10/07/25 Full Review Read all reviews
