What to Know

Critics Consensus

Misunderstood when it first hit theaters, the influence of Ridley Scott's mysterious, neo-noir Blade Runner has deepened with time. A visually remarkable, achingly human sci-fi masterpiece.

Pauline Kael The New Yorker This movie loses track of the few expectations it sets up, and the formlessness adds to a viewer's demoralization -- the film itself seems part of the atmosphere of decay. Sep 19, 2023 Full Review Scott Cain Atlanta Journal-Constitution Ridley Scott ought to be a set decorator, rather than a director. In Blade Runner, he loses sight of the story while devoting all his attention to decor and lighting. The decor and lighting, it must be admitted, are stupendous. Rated: 3/5 Nov 9, 2021 Full Review Zaki Hasan San Francisco Chronicle Still profound 18 years after its sell-by date, Blade Runner remains worthy of acclaim and analysis even as it exists in a "future" with very little resemblance to the one that came to pass. Nov 18, 2019 Full Review Clotilde Chinnici Loud and Clear Reviews Thanks to its powerful visuals and brilliant acting, it is a movie that does not get old: no matter how many times you revisit it, there will always be some new elements or symbolism that stand out with each rewatch. Rated: 4.5/5 Sep 14, 2024 Full Review Matt Brunson Film Frenzy Rarely in the annals of film history has a movie received a complete critical and popular reevaluation in as short a period of time as Blade Runner (and those of us who championed it since Day One plugged it at every opportunity). The M This story involves a man specializing in special cases as a "Blade Runner" to track and eliminate a group of rogue droids. The environment and setting of the world is breath taking with a mix of past and futuristic features of the city every detail including the main characters apartment has a somewhat dark tone, it places you in uncharted territory it has artistry just the world features alone. The characters such as the droids have that deep feeling and desire to live as well as exploring human emotions as well as learning to be a human. The cast was a fitted just right for these characters they each have an off tone to them leaving the spectator wondering what they might feel or react in such. The film score has a pleasing texture that compliments the scenery. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 12/19/24 Full Review Marcelo R My favorite movie ever made. Great directing, screenplay, art direction, cinematography, music score, and visual effects. Harrison Ford does a good job, but Rutger Hauer steals the show. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 11/27/24 Full Review Gareth B This has all the ingredients to make a movie that I absolutely love - a gritty detective story about robots wanting more life, set in a neon near-future, with stunning sets and locations, starring Harrison Ford and directed by Ridley Scott and music by Vangelis. And yet despite several attempts at watching and a desire to worship it, Blade Runner always leave me feeling underwhelmed and quite honestly wish it would hurry up and be over. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 11/17/24 Full Review Kyle C I’m not sure this movie is as deep as people think it is. It kind of meanders around a few deep questions without really saying anything. It’s obviously going for “what makes people people?” but lands at “well, if they’re hot then they’re probably people”. Because Deckard’s character doesn’t have any real personality, we’re left to fill in the many, many blanks of character development ourselves, which leads to an unsatisfying and unremarkable conclusion. That being said, Ridley Scott’s excellent direction, some amazing set pieces, and a lovely soundtrack make this a spectacle to enjoy while looking past the story. The retro-futuro-neo-noir is such a unique and engrossing atmosphere that it’s no wonder this film has had such an impact. The little details of futuristic society like the endless advertising, incessant rain, and massive culture shifts helps make the world feel very real and lived in. I’ve heard really good things about the 2049 sequel, so that’s next on the list, but overall I’m feeling a bit disappointed by this classic. And yes, I did watch the Final Cut. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 11/16/24 Full Review Muhammed a It's a good movie, a quality movie that needs to be watched. There were boring scenes, but it was a very good movie in terms of visual effects. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 11/15/24 Full Review John D This film is SO overrated. It was extremely boring and had me want to fall asleep. No action, no mystery just talking with awful graphics.
