Critics Consensus

Misunderstood when it first hit theaters, the influence of Ridley Scott's mysterious, neo-noir Blade Runner has deepened with time. A visually remarkable, achingly human sci-fi masterpiece.

Pauline Kael New Yorker This movie loses track of the few expectations it sets up, and the formlessness adds to a viewer's demoralization -- the film itself seems part of the atmosphere of decay. Sep 19, 2023 Full Review Scott Cain Atlanta Journal-Constitution Ridley Scott ought to be a set decorator, rather than a director. In Blade Runner, he loses sight of the story while devoting all his attention to decor and lighting. The decor and lighting, it must be admitted, are stupendous. Rated: 3/5 Nov 9, 2021 Full Review Zaki Hasan San Francisco Chronicle Still profound 18 years after its sell-by date, Blade Runner remains worthy of acclaim and analysis even as it exists in a "future" with very little resemblance to the one that came to pass. Nov 18, 2019 Full Review Clotilde Chinnici Loud and Clear Reviews Thanks to its powerful visuals and brilliant acting, it is a movie that does not get old: no matter how many times you revisit it, there will always be some new elements or symbolism that stand out with each rewatch. Rated: 4.5/5 Sep 14, 2024 Full Review Matt Brunson Film Frenzy Rarely in the annals of film history has a movie received a complete critical and popular reevaluation in as short a period of time as Blade Runner (and those of us who championed it since Day One plugged it at every opportunity). Kyle C I’m not sure this movie is as deep as people think it is. It kind of meanders around a few deep questions without really saying anything. It’s obviously going for “what makes people people?” but lands at “well, if they’re hot then they’re probably people”. Because Deckard’s character doesn’t have any real personality, we’re left to fill in the many, many blanks of character development ourselves, which leads to an unsatisfying and unremarkable conclusion. That being said, Ridley Scott’s excellent direction, some amazing set pieces, and a lovely soundtrack make this a spectacle to enjoy while looking past the story. The retro-futuro-neo-noir is such a unique and engrossing atmosphere that it’s no wonder this film has had such an impact. The little details of futuristic society like the endless advertising, incessant rain, and massive culture shifts helps make the world feel very real and lived in. I’ve heard really good things about the 2049 sequel, so that’s next on the list, but overall I’m feeling a bit disappointed by this classic. And yes, I did watch the Final Cut. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 11/16/24 Full Review Muhammed a It's a good movie, a quality movie that needs to be watched. There were boring scenes, but it was a very good movie in terms of visual effects. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 11/15/24 Full Review John D This film is SO overrated. It was extremely boring and had me want to fall asleep. No action, no mystery just talking with awful graphics. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 11/08/24 Full Review Варёные Y The best film of the century. The acting, soundtrack, scenery and special effects create a thick, dark atmosphere. The disastrous film has stood the tes of time, the special effects still amaze to the core. Excellent actors in leading roles - Rutger Hauer, Harrison Ford, Sean Young. The unhurried narrative literaly immerses you in the aesthetics of cyberpunk: eternal rain, darkness, neon signs and high-rise buildings stretching into the night sky. The architecture of the city is monumental and clearly shows the progress of humanity and the loneliness of the individual. THe music aestheticaly complements the atmsophere of the film, excites, frightens and delights. Deep philosophical implications about transience, fragility and value of life. This is the film tahnt you can and should think about. Religious symbolism goes side by side with brutal reality, forgivness becomes the apotheosis of cruelty. This film desreves many more awards, and I am pleased that it is now considered a cult cinema icon. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 11/07/24 Full Review Dale F Recently watched this for the first time so trying to give it benefit of doubt being over 40 years old. My honest opinion is the I liked the film overall but wasn’t the best especially when you compare to similar films from the time. Would probably watch it again but not anytime in near future.
