Critics Consensus

When it comes to building an entertaining sci-fi drama around some cool ideas, this Bliss is largely ignorant.

Audience Says

Don't be fooled by the famous cast or interesting plot summary -- this messy sci-fi drama is sadly short on Bliss.

Kate Erbland indieWire Even the worst simulation would have more clarity than this. Life might be messy and weird and scary, but it possesses more honesty than this cinematic misery. Rated: D+ Feb 11, 2021 Full Review Jesse Hassenger AV Club It's easy to get ahead of the story in Bliss, and its final stretch has a comedy-sketch capriciousness... Rated: C+ Feb 6, 2021 Full Review Gary Goldstein Los Angeles Times Writer-director Mike Cahill takes earnest stabs at big ideas and themes, including the concept of "bliss," but never clearly or cogently enough to draw us in on an emotional or intellectual level. Feb 6, 2021 Full Review Francesca Steele iNews.co.uk Casting against type can work well, but lumbered with a heavy-handed script, Wilson still feels like the guy who wants to crack open some Bud Light and make fart jokes. Audience Member You have to be a certain type of person to appreciate this movie. It was deep and a unique perspective on how to portray the mind in certain experiences. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 12/08/24 Full Review Kyle M Mike Cahill continues to ask existential questions in a more solid but convoluting, incoherent form when tackling a branch of “The Matrix” without the heroic prophecy rather as denial form of willingness till it questionably became something within something else to an unclear end. Altogether, participations seem just as confusing in aimless matters, except for Owen Wilson managing to connect our empathy with his resonating character going through an experience that qualifies how blissful ignorance can be. (C+) Rated 3 out of 5 stars 08/11/24 Full Review Philip S Hot take: the movie is genius if you've ever had and addiction to pills or anything else heavy. Its not a sci-fi movie. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 07/15/24 Full Review Audience Member Two lost hours of my life that I will never get back, total disappointment even though I adore Salma, Owen Wilson, the most pathetic actor that exists in the film industry. I think that only drugged or drunk roles would suit him. The story of the film is trivial as if the script was written by a guy with mental disabilities. Again, too bad for Salma, here she used the fact that she is beautiful and that's it. Anyway, Owen Wilson is a mediocre actor, who by some miracle gets good roles that he destroys. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 07/03/24 Full Review Nitsan S Almost started off with an interesting story... then went downhill like a car off a cliff. I didn't bother finishing it. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 03/15/24 Full Review on the b Although so called "official critics have stated this film with shocking reviews. I for one think this film hits the nail on the head. There are subtle things that hint towards the ideas of maya throughout and the film does a brilliant job of keeping you in the middle of the two worlds that Greg is experiencing. The film may only appeal to a select few but to those it will be gripping and utterly moving. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 03/03/24 Full Review Read all reviews
