It is such a lysergic collision of high art and low that its very outmodedness has now become a paradoxical part of its timeless appeal - and from such heady heights, the only way could be down for the slasher genre that Bava's film helped model.

Enthralling Italian murder mystery that solidified many of the tropes of the slasher genre. Visually arresting from its very first frames, the film features the richly decorated sets, candy-colored lighting, and nimble camerawork that would become mainstays of giallo filmmaking in the following decades. Despite some stilted dialogue and questionable dubbing, its central mystery is strong enough to maintain suspense and interest throughout.

1964 classic. Old theme but the actual killer or killers is a surprise plus motives. For it's time it is fine. Italian but most of the actors are light. Thomas Reiner is A German Actor. I assume the other are Italian. Great lighting and visuals. Set in Europe. Classical back drop.

Poised, masterful, and beautiful, this is not what you'd expect of a horror... the terror tropes have been reformed here, with aplomb, and it really works. A considered story from every angle, it is a joy to watch

Hugely influential and exists in a myriad of contradictions (beautifully shot and grotesque, high camp as well as serious emotional stakes, the murders are shockingly brutal but you empathize with the killer, etc.)

Viewed from a modern lens the pacing of this film doesn't lend itself much to contemporary viewing, and the acting feels pretty flat too. Its admittedly stylistically ahead of the curve though.
