don s An average gangster movie during which 3 small town fishermen move to Shanghai to seek fortune and quickly become ensconced in criminal activities. There is a love story subplot, but it is not handled well. None of the characters stand out, and there is little action. It is watchable but only by a small margin. It's been awhile since I've seen a good triad movie. This one was done rather alright and I knew from the beginning that there couldn't be a happy ending between the brothers. Was really hoping that somethings such as women, money and power wouldn't influence the three brothers that grew up together in a small village. I was really hoping the film to end once they got back to their village in the countryside... but some grudges don't just end. Shanghai as an asian "Chicago roaring 20s" is majestic, and dear memories of Indie's club Obi Wan sprung to mind; unfortunately, the thin script wear off easily, without developing promising characters and their relationship, and wasting too much time in drama (with a shamelessly not undressed Shu Qi) instead of starting bloody gunfights every minute - till the satisfactory ending shootout.
