Bill Goodykoontz Arizona Republic It's an inconsistent film, put together somewhat haphazardly, but Keenan is such a compelling presence - smart, polite, creative and seemingly so full of bottled-up rage he might tear someone's head off at any second - that it's a journey well worth follo Rated: 3.5/5 Feb 26, 2010 Full Review Mike Scott Times-Picayune It's edgy, it's funny, it revels in doing things its own way -- but it's also smart, offering an edifying inside peek into an industry that doesn't always welcome outsiders. Rated: 3/4 Sep 3, 2010 Full Review Rob Thomas Capital Times (Madison, WI) While the film contains some interesting tidbits about both wine and Keenan, and some unexpected humor by comedians like Patton Oswalt and Bob Odenkirk, the movie never really justifies its existence except as an informercial for Keenan's winery. Rated: 2/4 Jun 4, 2010 Full Review Robert W. Butler Kansas City Star This well-made film chronicles the sweat, tears, false starts and massive expenditures involved in getting such an operation up and running. Rated: 2.5/4 Apr 9, 2010 Full Review Jeff Vice Deseret News (Salt Lake City) Co-directors Ryan Page and Christopher Pomerenke manage to stuff a lot of facts into their film. This may be one of the more informative, nonfiction movies made about winemaking. Rated: 3/4 Mar 4, 2010 Full Review Shaula Clark Boston Phoenix Surely everyone can appreciate the gorgeous Verde Valley vistas and out-of-left-field celebrity cameos, which include Bob Odenkirk as a grape-mauling French wine snob. Audience Member Legendary Maynard James Keenan's interest in wine unfolded into his involvement in Jerome, Arizona and his envolving wine brand. The documentary itself is quite avarage, nothing bone-shattering. Maynard is a interesting personality and makes this piece interesting. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 02/27/23 Full Review Audience Member Documentary on Tool/A Perfect Circle's Maynard James Keenan and his winemaking endeavor. As a HUGE fan of his work, I was really excited to see another side of this fairly reclusive artist. But instead we see him as part of a film that never quite finds its voice. The attempts at humor really fall flat, especially his "interview" clips. This one is for fans of the band and completists. Expect to be left wanting more. Then again, we Tool fans are used to it. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 01/24/23 Full Review Audience Member I'm not a wine drinker so I wasn't fully into this movie. Whereas I am very interested in Maynard Keenan, this documentary didn't grab me. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 02/13/23 Full Review Audience Member As much as I love Tool and A Perfect Circle, I just could not get into this bland documentary. Sure he had some help and comic relief from Bon Odenkirk and Patton Oawalt and their scenes were funny.., still couldn't save this or make it interesting enough to watch a second time or recommend to someone. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 01/12/23 Full Review Audience Member Blood into Wine never can't decide if it wants to be about Maynard (the 'rock star') or, a couple of blokes defying the odds as winemakers in Arizona. Filled with attempts at comedy, possibly trying to loosen up a topic oft considered snobby and cliquey, it's the factual and serious sections that actually resonate. I'm a wine drinker AND a Tool fan so I probably got more out of this doco than most. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 01/14/23 Full Review Audience Member Average documentary about Tool vocalist Maynards James Keenan endeavor in operating his own winery in Arizona. I really thought that this film, though interesting lacked in really giving wine enthusiasts something worthwhile to watch. This is a film more for fans of Tool, and though I really love Keenan's music, I found this film to be lacking. For fans, this film will certainly give you another aspect of Maynard's life. The process that is used in making wines is documented here, but like I said, there is something lacking here to really make this documentary stand out. I liked the documentary, but I've seen better films in the genre. If you're expecting a great documentary, you'll be sadly disappointed. This is a movie strictly for Tool fans, and even then, this may be a disappointment. For a wine making documentary, there should be a much better film than this. I felt that this one just touched the tip of the iceberg of wine making, The film doesn't go in depth into the process, which is what I wanted, and it opens a door into Keenan's other passion other than music. Overall, good, but it should have been much better. Blood Into Wine is only an average documentary on wine making, and it's one of those documentaries that needed to be more elaborate in terms of its subject, and considering that Wine making is such a passion for many people, you'd expect a great movie. Good for what it is, but it's not the definitive wine making documentary. Luckily Tool is a great band, and it's interesting to see this part of Keenan's life, but in the end, that's all this film is.
