Bloodshot gives Vin Diesel a solid opportunity to indulge in old-school action that should satisfy fans, even if the end result is disappointingly mediocre. Read critic reviews

I really disliked the ending, but the first fight scene also was some of that straight-up injectable #TheAesthetic shit. Those two kind of cancel each other out, and the rest of the movie I was pretty middle of the road on, so I guess the whole thing averaged out to 2.5 outta 5. Maybe it would have been a better experience on the big screen, but we aren't allowed to do that anymore, so, sorry Bloodshot but, you're stuck with a moderately-favourable "meh".

Bloodshot is the kind of junky sci-fi action movie you might have seen in the 90s before The Matrix, the kind of thing that an X-Files episode would have covered, probably with a better sense of storytelling. Based on a Valiant comic book, and reportedly the first step in a hopeful Valiant Cinematic Universe (oh boy), Vin Diesel stars as dead soldier given new life thanks to tiny nanites living in his blood that magically repair his body, making him nigh invincible. He gets vengeance on the man who killed his wife or so he believes, as Diesel's memory is wiped after every successful kill and re-implanted with new memories of a new identity of his wife's murderer. The movie plays this as a big twist even though it was central in the trailer and advertising, and despite the fact that it seems too convoluted a path for a science project in the billions, it's pretty predictable. That's the problem with Bloodshot is that it's a two-hour action movie that feels like it's going through the motions, built upon the spare parts of other better movies, and heading in one direction that's too telegraphed. The action is over-edited and under developed, with first-time director Dave Wilson (an esteemed director of video game cut scenes and promo trailers) getting lost in the "cool stuff" of his world, little gizmos and side characters rounding out Diesel's super-powered teammates and later opponents. You can feel that certain visual compositions are here just to look cool for a trailer. I was looking for the super-powered action sequences to be a major source of fun with this one and they left me shrugging. There's one CGI-heavy fight scene down 50 stories of elevator shaft that has some moments to it, but as a whole Bloodshoot feels bloodless with its excitement. The appearance of Diesel being rebuilt by the wispy nanites reminded me of Apocalypse's weird sand powers in X-Men: Apocalypse. Having its main character essentially be invulnerable takes the stakes out of his fights, which means even more thinking needs to go into the action design to maximize this effect. The final confrontation between Diesel and his tormentor (Guy Pearce, making a home for himself as this kind of character) has a clean and clever resolution I appreciated, but it was a long slog to get to something clever in construction and execution here. If you're looking for a pretty straightforward action movie that you won't have to burden much thought with, you could do worse than Bloodshot. This also has Eiza Gonzalez in another movie where she plays a CGI-augmented version of herself (Alita: Battle Angel, Welcome to Marwen), so there's that too. At this rate, I don't think we're going to be getting that Valiant Cinematic Universe if this is the inauspicious kickoff. Nate's Grade: C

Bloodshot had all the markings of a 80s epic action film, but sadly it never reaches those heights. It's a hard film to review. On one hand it has the core elements of the comic, but on the other hand, it's underwhelming from a cinematic perspective. The casting choice of Diesel is a miscast, or the filmmaker was the incorrect choice here. I'm unsure if Diesel's ego or status impacted the film, but this is way to safe for a new comic book film. Valiant Comics needed to launch onto the scene and this film doesn't offer that. The character is awesome, and from an action film viewpoint, he had endless opportunities. I don't feel the filmmakers allowed the storyline to flow, and when the twists start revealing themselves, they're not earth shattering. I liked the action, but dialogue was heavy and nothing flowed. There's an opportunity to course correct in a sequel, but sadly the damage has been done here. 27/03/2020

When it comes to schlocky cinema, there are times when it works for me and times when it really doesn't, just like every moviegoer. When I find a film that does work but is admittedly not all that great, I have more fun watching it than I should. Bloodshot was the most recent film to be released that I felt this way towards. So, even though I may talk pretty highly about some aspects, don't let that make you believe it's a great movie, because it's absolutely not. Here's why, with your own discretion, you should check this one out.  After Ray Garrison witnesses the murder of his significant other and is then killed himself in the heat of combat, he is then reborn by an organization that has replaced his blood with nanites. These living things/robots work as his blood and allow him to regenerate any wounds, within reason. This also gives him agility and strength, pretty much making him a superhero. Finding out there is much more to this organization than he originally was led to believe, a pretty fun action flick begins to unfold. Although none of the actors/actresses here are giving award-worthy performances, I think it was this assembled cast that made me like this movie as much as I did.  Vin Diesel has never been one of the greatest actors in the world, but I've always enjoyed watching him on-screen. His back and forth here with Eiza Gonzalez was likeable and it's probably the best performances I've seen from her so far. It's never a bad thing to add Guy Pearce to your film either, but I'm starting to feel like he is being given incredibly familiar roles every time he is cast. I haven't seen him in anything different from this since his role in Iron Man 3 back in 2013, aside from maybe The Rover.  Now, here's where audiences will know whether or not they will want to check this film out if you already didn't. Bloodshot absolutely takes itself seriously, so if you're looking for a self-aware movie that warrants it's schlock, I would say you're in the wrong place. There are moments that had me engaged and others that had me rolling my eyes, but it all worked together as a piece of filmmaking that is forgettable, but also one that I will probably watch one or two more times when I can't find anything else to watch. There's nothing Shakespearean here, but if cool visual effects, a good enough premise, and an overdone conclusion doesn't bother you too much, I feel that this is something you can check out. In the end, I kind of knew what I was getting myself into, simply due to the fact that it was directed by Dave Wilson. Having done the visual effects work for movies like Avengers: Age of Ultron and video games like Star Wars: The Force Unleashed II, without ever having directed anything outside of one short film, I expected a little more style over substance. While Bloodshot definitely fits that description, I just had a lot of fun watching it. This movie certainly won't please everyone, but there are far worse action movies out there. In the years to come, I will probably look back on Bloodshot and call it one of my favourite guilty pleasures.
