Clement Tyler Obropta Film Inquiry Where Bloody Spear at Mount Fuji's ending is one big, furious swing, the rest of the picture is resplendent, gentle, even laid back, at once employing samurai tropes and subverting them, offering a complex rewriting of Japanese national mythology. Jul 10, 2021 Full Review Panos Kotzathanasis Asian Movie Pulse "Bloody Spear at Mount Fuji" is a great film, as it presents a different take on the samurai concept and a number of social comments, while retaining its entertainment values at all times. Dec 2, 2019 Full Review Rob Aldam Backseat Mafia Bloody Spear at Mount Fuji is a charming and heart-warming drama which is full of love and humanity, but with a twist in the tail. Audience Member Entertaining samurai flick with just enough substance to satisfy. Lighthearted most of the way, but the shift into slightly darker territory at the end is handled well. Well worth checking out! Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 01/19/23 Full Review Audience Member This may be the first ensemble road film I've seen, and it's certainly a comic and charming film. The title is a bit misleading since the mood of the story is very cheerful for most of the film. There are a lot of characters in the film and the only one that can be considered a "main character" is the spear carrier. Uchida doesn't give us much background on them and instead focus on weaving together all the character interactions effortlessly while keeping a good pace. I suppose the purpose of this was to show how people from all different classes and groups of society can live harmoniously without any social prejudices. Yet in the end Uchida subverts this idealism with a shocking display of violence. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 01/18/23 Full Review Audience Member A lighthearted samurai romp, that is, until the ending. I think I would give this a higher rating if it hadn't been marred down by suspence music and some awkward close-ups and the like, but for the most part the very western-influenced jazz score worked very well. It's expertly filmed. Uchida has a way of making the individuals in a crowd, seem like individuals with their own stories and not just random extras.
