John Anderson Variety One of the better sports movies in recent memory, Blue Blood is a counteragent to the era of the steroid-shooting superhero, a film that puts athletics back in perspective, and on a human scale. Apr 7, 2014 Full Review Helen O'Hara Empire Magazine The story's slight, but it's still an exhilarating look at an unlikely group of heroes, scored and edited for maximum effect. Rated: 3/5 Apr 7, 2014 Full Review Dave Calhoun Time Out Stevan Riley succeeds in offering a restrained and insightful portrait of the personalities behind personal glories won and lost within the pressures of such an institutional hot-house. Rated: 3/5 Apr 7, 2014 Full Review Total Film Real life Rockys with stiff upper (class) lips come out of their corners in Blue Blood, a captivating film about the Oxford University boxing team. Rated: 4/5 Apr 7, 2014 Full Review David Parkinson Radio Times Their various trials and tribulations make for sturdy docusoap-style viewing. Rated: 3/5 Apr 7, 2014 Full Review Michelle Thomas Future Movies UK A minority interest at best, yet for the most part director Stevan Riley succeeds in making an accessible and entertaining film about what could potentially be an alienatingly arcane look at Varsity sports. Audience Member Absolutely ridicilous: like MTV's "Made" meets "The Fast Show"! If I hadn't seen this from the start I would have thought this is a poor comedy; not a documentary. There's no critical thinking none what so ever from the director's part (a former 'Oxford Blue' himself), the scenes are dragged too long, the music is way too pointing and this has nothing to do with boxing. This piece of something is a disgrace towards the real world of sports and everybody in it, both amateurs and pros, since it fails to understand the meaning of true dedication and skill. The main characters are also mostly annoying too. It's sickening to watch how stuffy places Oxford and Cambridge still are and how the blue collar coach, for some incomprehensible reason (money?), is kissing the college boys' behinds... And btw: O. & C. aren't "the best two universities in the world" anymore - Cambridge is 4. or 26., Oxford is 10. or 47. according to: http://www.arwu.org/rank2008/en2008.htm or http://www.webometrics.info/ A pathetic attempt of a documentary. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 01/21/23 Full Review Audience Member I thought it was going to be a film not a documentary but quite good if your intrested in boxing. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 02/23/23 Full Review Audience Member I have never mixed in the Circles of people who go to university let alone Oxford , one of the most famous in the world , but i have done a bit of amateur boxing and Blue Blood is a fascinating look at how a group of young men cope with the sport for the first time. It follows the training regime and sparring contests of the students who step out of the ivory tower and into the boxing ring. Not exactly born into the sport, the polite, fine-boned men of the Oxford Boxing Club come from backgrounds in astrophysics, mathematics, philosophy, and debating. But they all share the desire to periodically leave their chosen fields behind, train as hard as they can, step into the ring, and beat the crap out of those Cambridge boys. It's not the boxing that makes this film a delight to watch it's the personalities of the boys. All different , all a million miles from being boxers. There is Fred who does not fit into the University way of life . Charlie , a likable lad who likes to think he's a hit with the women. Justin , the irritating all American Texas graduate who is so in love with himself if he was made of chocolate he would eat his own body. Boiler the mathematician who to look at looks like there is nothing between his ears and finally Kavanagh the star of the film . A gangly , nerd of a kid who just does not realise that he is being ridiculed for being so dorky! There was a spinal Tap feel to this documentary at times just because some of these students were so over the top with their eccentricity . Especially Justin who you could not help but hope he beaten to a pulp in the ring. The one thing that i was surprised about was that the Oxfordians weren't all stuck up snobs which you might expect , but highly motivated people from all walks of life. The one exception being a young philosophy teacher who was so ridiculously posh you wanted to punch him yourself! Director Stevan Riley deserves a lot of credit for making a highly entertaining look at a world most people never see . 7 out of 10 Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 02/05/23 Full Review Audience Member thank fuck the yank lost. funny interesting documentary that achieves the impossible and makes you empathise with privileged schoolboys, well some of them at least. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 01/17/23 Full Review Audience Member Absolutely fab. I saw this advertised on myspace and have been waiting to see it ever since. Now I have I'm so glad I did. The film was made to perfection, brilliant use of camera angles and music. My heart really goes out to those guys too. Well done to all concerned. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/25/23 Full Review Audience Member Documentary about the Oxford-Cambridge varsity boxing match. It's excellently made, very knowing in a good way and genuinely funny. A couple of times the way they edited something made me laugh out loud. It always keeps its distance, but still gets close enough to the main protagonists to allow you to feel some considerable empathy. It's basically a warm, engaging and funny take on some fairly basic human traits that transcend class divisions - fear of failure, insecurity, friendship, humour, ambition... I highly recommend it.
